Thread: KCP - Kawaii Codec Pack

  1. #1

Default KCP - Kawaii Codec Pack

Tired of bad media playback? I bring to you the ultimate solution: KCP aka "Kawaii Codec Pack"
    KCP-0.5.2.3_[52439BC5].exe CRC32: 52439BC5 KCP-0.5.2.4_[C7E19459].exe CRC32: C7E19459
    MPC-HC Lite Build
    madVR v0.86.1
LAVFilters-0.56.2 x86 (Audio and Video Filters + Splitter)
    xy-VSFilter 3.0.0.211
    MPC-HC Lite Build
    madVR v0.86.1
LAVFilters-0.55.3 x86 (Audio and Video Filters + Splitter)
    xy-VSFilter 3.0.0.211
    ReClock v1.8.8.0 (optional)

*You can alternatively access this page via http://haruhichan.com/KCP
*Please make sure you only download KCP from the links given to you on this first post, no where else!

MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL OR HAVE THE FOLLOWING BEFOREHAND
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86)
(you most likely already have this installed but its best to play it safe, some filters require this)
.NET Framework 3.0 (If you need this windows should notify you, it comes with all versions of windows since vista)

Please make sure you uninstall ALL instances of MPC-HC, CCCP, ffdshow, madVR, Haali, K-lite, CoreAVC etc. before installing KCP. They may conflict, so do this to be safe .

I am looking to receive your input on what you would like to see added and what customization options you would like to see in the near future. Your feedback will help improve and mold this codec pack into what it is/will become.

This codec pack will result in higher image quality and performance than using CCCP, so if you’re struggling to play back Hi10P anime, or even regular 1080p, consider trying this. This codec pack will be updated regularly and uses very new versions of libav for decoding as well as custom edits to make 10-bit decoding even faster, giving it much more speed than the ridiculously outdated ffdshow-tryouts project.

    Features:
    • Given the ability install the latest xy-VSFilter (optionally)
    • Given the ability install madVR (-evr-cp set as renderer if madVR is not installed)
    • Quick configuration app
    • Optional DXVA2/CUDA support
    • Hi10P/10-bit support
    • Chapters shown on seekbar
    • Able to take screenshots
    • Visually approving like your eyes have never seen before
    • No more excuses to be lazy, since it just works

Minimum requirements (We have spent dedicated time testing KCP on various setups, these are the minimum requirements we have found that work best):
    OS: Vista SP1, Windows 7, Windows 8
Specs: 1.6 Ghz, 1 GB RAM and 64 MB for GPU. (Note: This is for 720p Hi10P/10-bit playback)
This is subject to change as we are making some installer presets for certain specs.

    Tips:
    - I can't stress this enough uninstall old filters/codec packs before installing.

    - During playback, press Ctrl+J to bring up the madVR OSD. Pay attention to Dropped/Delayed frames. Obviously, you want these as low as possible (remember that starting a video will usually cause a few dropped/delayed frames). If frames are being dropped/delayed every few seconds, drop down to a different tier setting on install.

    - Ctrl-R will reset Delayed/Dropped frames to 0.

    - Remember that the video also affects the rendering speed. Test out some grain intensive or high-bitrate videos. If you can play those back just fine, you'll be good for just about everything. OPs/EDs are generally good for this since they can be the most rendering intensive parts of a show, and can easily be used as a test over-and-over again to see different results.

-The installer gives you the option of enabling hardware acceleration in LAV-Video. It has been observed that enabling hardware acceleration may cause issues for some individuals. Feel free to experiment.

-Smooth motion is an optional feature in madVR that significantly enhances video quality. In order to use this feature, ensure that hardware acceleration is off in LAV-Video. The use of hardware acceleration has been reported to cause excessive dropped frames.

Main to do list: (see posts in this thread for more detailed and bigger list, or to contribute a suggestion)
    1. Make installer way more kawaii (our graphic designers are busy fapping atm) - We've started but it just isn't kawaii enough.
    2. Auto updater (work in progress)
    3. Add customization options to the installer for those who are picky
    4. Search for bugs
    5. Test it out as much as we can

    Known bugs or issues:
    Nothing at the moment.

    Updates and Test Builds:
Stable releases are to made about roughly every month.
Test builds are made frequently but at random.

We make frequent small updates and push them out as test builds.
Test builds may have bugs, that's why we test!
Test builds are eventually marked as stable or succeed by another build.
If you would like to contribute to the testing effort, feel free to and post your results in this thread.

Please leave your feedback! Without it we won't know what to improve on. If all goes well (or not), say something below!

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Reference:
    madVR scaling algorithms:
The following settings have been approved by madshi (creator of madVR).
The settings corresponding to "Low Tier" correlate to what madshi configures in a default madVR install.
During KCP installation, the Mid-tier option is selected as the default option unless the user specifies another tier.
None of these tiers have yet to be associated with any hardware specs officially. User feedback is greatly appreciated as always.

Random ramblings in a very informal tone by seidweise:

    About the pack:
If you are bored and care to read this, it's coded by me, seidweise, hi.
It uses inno setup to install components, I chose inno because its pretty straightforward and easy to customize.
Application of the settings are done with embedded code written in C in vs2010.
The settings app is a simple C++ app using .NET framework components to make it super easy to maintain.
The pack is based off nand's/Swaps4's original Hi10P guide found on this site with the addition of xy-vsfilter and the madVR presets.

How long did it take to make the pack?
I made about 50% of this pack in under a day (and made it do everything that nand's/Swaps4's guide did).
The other 50% was settings optimizations that the awesome people in this thread suggested and were included over time.
The settings app took ~8 hours to code because I was really indecisive on how to organize everything properly.

Why did you make the pack?
A year ago when Swaps4/nand made the first Hi10P guide, Swaps4 kept insisting to me that I make it automated. I shrugged off the idea and was like why should there be? Its pretty easy to follow the guide. But people on the internet are inherently lazy, including myself. Tools are made for a reason, to make life easier. After coding a few apps for myself to take care of little tasks I caved and said it worth the effort.

My current opinion: If you want to do it all manually, all the power to you. Follow a Hi10P guide to help you along the way. (What I find most amusing is that all the Hi10P guides says the same thing, yet people insist on arguing over which is superior, ily internet.) Hopefully you learn from the experience and get an idea of how all this shit works (and maybe come here and give suggestions or your opinion). Otherwise, if you don't give a shit then I find following the guide a wasted effort.

    My current goals:
Give something back to the anime community.
    Make life easier for encoders.
    Improve my own coding knowledge.
Make a pack that works great on modern PCs and make it configurable for the advanced user.

Heya folks. Thanks for the useful tool, I'll include that in my guide as well.

For now, I have some suggestions and I believe I found a bug.

    Suggestions:

    1. Make LAV Splitter installation optional. There are some useful things that it can do better than Haali (like DTS handling).
    2. Use a stable version of MPC-HC. I know, I know, being on edge is always cool, but the versions available at xhmikosr.1f0.de/mpc-hc/ are still beta after all, so this is just a heads up.

    The bug:

For some reason, I can't get to use Haali Media Splitter. It doesn't matter if it's set to prefer or not in the "External Filters", MPC-HC will use it's internal splitter.

PS: If it helps, I used a .reg with my own settings for MPC-HC, but I don't believe that's the cause.

Its installed with LAV but the component is not registered (and made not usable on purpose).
I will add in the option to choose between LAV or Haali

If you can upload your .reg config with LAV splitter working for me to look at.

I know the risks of beta builds, maybe I can give the option to choose to install the beta build.
The whole purpose of this beta is to get an idea of what installation options people want to see. (I'm trying to cater to both basic and advanced users)

In regards to the bug, its using MPC internal on my fresh win8 install. Investigating whats wrong atm.
EDIT: missing a few reg entries adding them into the installer thx for the help
