United Nations Discuss Banning Explicit Manga and Games

Recently, the United Nations’ Special Envoy on Child Protection, Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, has begun to discuss the banning of manga that “depicts sexual images of children in Japanese manga.” She adds, “I accept that the freedom of expression argument should prevail when it comes to adult pornography.” During her speech, she asked for the Japanese government to clamp down on illustrations of children that contain sexual undertones, referring to mainly manga, as they are not currently illegal under the amendment to the law regarding the possession of child pornography.

This amendment, which came into effect last year, made it illegal in Japan to possess child porn, so long as you had no plans on selling it or distributing it, but this year, in July, it became illegal to possess whatsoever. Although manga readers everywhere might fear that this will encroach on the materials that are discussed in their favorite series, and series still to be written, there should be no reason to raise concern as six years ago, similar talks were had between the United Nations and Japan, and nothing really happened.

Yeah I am a clinical therapist. I have studied, worked with, and talked with paedophiles and children and child sex abuse victims. Lolicon/Shotacon have nothing to do with the prevalence or actions of paedophiles. Paedophilia, as it stands, is an inborn sexuality like any other, just incredibly dangerous. A person will not become a paedophile from looking at lolis. Also, research shows that real CP can help reduce the risk of hands on offenses of paedophiles. It all depends on the studios: if they plan on exporting it, it’s very likely that an uncensored version will come out… Besides, censoring alone is not an issue, but completely banning stuff is.

    God, you’re having that problem too? California was trying to pass a state-wide law that would ban violent video games. To this day, I still use a quote from an article about it and what the US Supreme Court had decided.

    Yeah, that’s a detail many people might overlook, but remember what happenned to “The Pirate Bay” web site? Those guys even changed their icon from a pirate ship to a Hydra (you cut one head, two take it’s place), or the Phoenix (reborn from it’s ashes)…
    Also, there are crazy alternatives like the one used to ilegally access Netflix, by VPNs… The internet is a real pain when you want to censor stuff…
    Again, the best way though, is open dialogue with society AND directly to the public that enjoys said subject, in order to study if that IS really a problem, something that these “people” don’t accept nor spend a second thinking about, that’s why so much illegal stuff happens online. (I’m not favorable to at all it, but sometimes even I wonder where’s the illegal and the unfair boundary)

In my opinion there shouldn’t be a straight on ban on things but more of a restriction where it’s legal to buy for those of age who present a legal identification, thus the government will be able to see whos buying and control how much its being sold. Banning the things will just cause the people to go dragstic measures to obtain it which might lead to hurting people on the way. Plus banning something will just make people to seek the black market for what they are looking for, or boot leg places.

  Loli has been illegal here in the UK since 2009, yet I break the law (because it’s unjust) and still collect/look at it. So this raises the question, why? I mean, photos and recorded footage of children engaged in sexual situations are also illegal. I’d be breaking the law either way. So how come I look at one, but not the other?
