The Coming of Age (Seijin no Hi) festival is celebrated on the second Monday of January. It celebrates those who have turned twenty years or who will do so before March 31 of the current year. Twenty is the age considered as the beginning of adulthood. It is also the minimum legal age for voting, drinking, and smoking in Japan. Many women celebrate this day by wearing furisode, a style of kimono with long sleeves that hang down, and zouri sandals. While men sometimes also wear traditional dress (e.g. dark kimono with hakama), but nowadays many men wear formal Western clothes such as a suit and tie more often than the traditional hakama.
It’s a special day for men and women alike, although this year, one dedicated Love Live! Yazawa Nico fan decided to put a twist on the traditional furisode for something a little more in line with her hobbies:
A group of women in the background can be seen wearing the more traditional garment, while the Yazawa Nico fan is equipped with a Yu Gi Oh! Duel Disk and glow sticks. After the event, she tweeted out a message saying: “The wait is over. Fukui prefecture. I did it. Coming-of-Age ceremony.” which also included more pictures:
A day before the event, she tweeted an image which included the costume she planned to wear:
Idol fans are clearly the most dedicated type of anime fans.
