The Wind Rises, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica The Movie – Rebellion and A Letter to Momo are in The Oscar Mix for Best Animated Film Nominations
Last Tuesday, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its long list of submissions to be considered for possible Oscar nominations in the Best Animated Feature for the 86th Academy Awards. A total of 19 films were submitted which includes three anime films: Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s The Wind Rises, Akiyuki Shinbo and SHAFT’s Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica The Movie Rebellion-, and Production I.G and Hiroyuki Okiura’s A Letter to Momo.
The other animated films are:
- Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
- The Croods
- Despicable Me 2
- Epic
- Ernest and Celestine
- The Fake
- Free Birds
- Frozen
- Khumba
- The Legend of Sarila
- Monsters University
- O Apóstolo
- Planes
- Rio: 2096 A Story of Love and Fury
- The Smurfs 2
- Turbo
According to the Academy rules, there will be 5 nominees in this category since there are more than 16 films submitted and accepted. The Academy will announce the official slate of nominees on January 16, 2014. The list also includes films that haven’t been released yet, in Los Angeles, California, such as Frozen.
Last year, From Up On Poppy Hill and The Mystical Laws were submitted but were not nominated. In 2011, no anime was submitted for considerations and Summer Wars was submitted for the 83rd Academy Awards last 2010, but was not nominated as well.
In 2003 Studio Ghibli’s The Spirited Away got nominated and eventually won the coveted award.
The Academy will announce the official slate of nominees on January 16, 2014. And the awards ceremony takes place on the 2nd of March.
