Hayao Miyazaki Says Charlie Hebdo Cartoons Were a Mistake

17

Those following the news would know that last month the offices of satirical newspaper publication Charlie Hebdo were attacked following the drawing of the prophet Muhammad. Armed gunmen killed 12 during the attack and what followed was a mass of “free speech” parades, politicians and celebrities alike condemning the attack, as well as the popular hashtag #JeSuisCharlie (I am Charlie). The full report on the attack itself can be found here.

In a recent radio interview on TBS Radio, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, director of the critically acclaimed Spirited Away and master filmmaker, Hayao Miyazaki discussed the issue.

Hayao Miyazaki Studio Ghibli Haruhichan.com Charlie Hebdo Comic

According to him, “it’s a mistake to make caricatures of what different cultures worship– It’s a good idea to stop doing that”. Miyazaki went on to say “First and foremost, [caricatures] should be made of your own country’s politicians– It just looks suspect to go after political leaders from other countries.”

From this it can be ascertained that while Miyazaki isn’t against satire or criticizing politicians, one should still respect what others worship. While the religion doesn’t worship the prophet himself, he is still a religious figure and thus Miyazaki feels this should be respected.

It should also be noted that this does not mean Miyazaki condones the attack – simply that he has an alternate viewpoint – one that many may not have considered.

What do you think about this topic? Do you agree with what Miyazaki says? Or do you think the contents of this interview is a mistake? Let us know in the comments section below!

Parasyte is a science fiction horror manga series written and illustrated by Hitoshi Iwaaki, and published in Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine from 1990 to 1995. The manga was published in North America by first Tokyopop, then Del Rey, and finally Kodansha Comics USA. The manga is being adapted into two live-action films in Japan in 2014 and 2015. An anime television series adaptation is currently airing

Parasyte synopsis from Haruhichan:

Based on Iwaaki Hitoshi’s science-fiction horror manga by the same name.

The 17-year-old Izumi Shinichi lives with his mother and father in a quiet neighborhood in Tokyo. One night, worm-like aliens called Parasytes invade Earth, taking over the brains of human hosts by entering through their ears or noses. One Parasyte attempts to crawl into Shinichi’s ear while he sleeps, but fails since he is wearing headphones, and enters his body by burrowing into his arm instead, taking over his right hand and is named Migi.

Because Shinichi was able to prevent Migi from traveling further up into his brain, both beings retain their separate intellect and personality. As the duo encounter other Parasytes, they capitalize on their strange situation and gradually form a strong bond, working together to survive. This gives them an edge in battling other Parasytes, who frequently attack the pair upon realization that Shinichi’s human brain is still intact. Shinichi feels compelled to fight other Parasytes, who devour humans as food, while enlisting Migi’s help.

Strike Witches: Operation Victory Arrow Vol. 3 Promotional Video Streamed

0

The official website for the Strike Witches anime began streaming first promotional video for the third and final OVA of the series, Strike Witches: Operation Victory Arrow Vol. 3: Arnhem no Hashi (Arnhem Bridge) last Friday. The new PV previews the anime’s Opening theme: Connect Link by Yoko Ishida.

Strike Witches: Operation Victory Arrow Vol. 3 will be releasing in Japanese theatres on May 2nd.

The third OVA is set after the events of the second season of the Strike Witches anime and before the 2012 movie. It will also be the final OVA in the Operation Victory Arrow series, which began with Strike Witches: Operation Victory Arrow Vol. 1: St. Trond no Raimei which released in September last year and Strike Witches: Operation Victory Arrow Vol. 2 – Aegean Umi no Megami, which released on the 10th of January.

Strike-Witches_Haruhichan.com-Victory-Arrow-Vol-2-Visual

Strike Witches is a media project that started in 2005 based off of Humikane Shimada’s illustrations. The first project was a manga from Yoshiyuki Kazumi, but was cancelled after one volume. A light novel series from Noboru Yamaguchi released the following year in Kadokawa Shoten’s Sneaker Bunko imprint for a total of 3 volumes. This was followed by an OVA and anime adaptation from Gonzo (Welcome to the N.H.K.) in 2007 and 2008 respectively. Since then, many more manga and light novel adaptations were released, as well as the anime’s second season and an animated film, all animated by AIC (Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari).

Here is a synopsis of Strike Witches from Haruhichan:

The year is 1944 and the world lives in fear of unidentified flying objects called Neuroi. With the old-boy old guard unable to thwart this deadly menace, humanity turns its desperate eyes to an aerial attack force with much nicer legs. Meet the girls of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, better known as the Strike Witches. These darlings of the great blue yonder may not have standard issue uniforms, but they do have all the right stuff. Where the average flyboy falters, these dolls blast aliens to bits in the bat of an eyelash. With a little magic and a whole lot of leg, the girls of the 501st are winning the war on pants, and aliens!

Strike Witches: Operation Victory Arrow Vol. 3 – Arnhem no Hashi will be releasing in Japanese theatres on May 2nd.
