Aldnoah.Zero is a brand new original series created by Gen Urobuchi, the writer of the Fate/Zero light novels and anime, and Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica. The anime is directed by Ei Aoki who directed the Fate/Zero anime – teaming up with Urobuchi once again. The series is written by the “Olympus Knights”, a group of writers from Nitro+ (known for their science adventure visual novels) that is helmed by Urobuchi. Katsuhiko Takayama (Mirai Nikki) is the series composer, managing the flow and story of the series.

The character concepts are done by Masako Matsumoto (Naruto Shippuden) and the final character designs from Takako Shimura (Aoi Hana). The series features mechs designed by I-IV and Kenji Teraoka (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), and the music is composed by Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack on Titan). The series is produced by A-1 Pictures (Sword Art Online, Fairy Tail) and studio TROYCA (new studio opened by Aoki). The first series had a total of 12 episodes and was earlier confirmed to be a split cour.

Aldnoah.Zero synopsis from Haruhichan:

In 1972, the Apollo 17 mission found a hypergate to Mars on the surface of the moon. Upon landing, astronauts discovered a enchanted utility later referred to as ‘Aldnoah’, giving the astronauts a status of superiority. Soon, many humans have relocated to Mars, and have adapted to the name ‘Martians’. After Princess Asseylum, a royal Martian princess, descends onto Earth in an attempt to create a treaty between both planets, a war breaks out between Earth and Mars, and Martian soldiers begin to descend from the sky, riding steel giants, intent on exterminating humanity.

Grisaia no Kajitsu: Le Fruit De La Grisaia is a visual novel by Front Wing that originally released on February 15 2011 for Windows. The novel features character designs from Akio Watanabe and Fumio (Tomoyo After ~It’s a Wonderful Life~), scenarios written by Nachi Kio, Ryuta Fujisaki, Yoshigazu Kuwashima, and Kazuya, with Elements Garden (Mouretsu Pirates) composing the music. The first novel was ported to the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita last year. Additionally, a manga adaptation began serialization last February.

Here is a synopsis of Grisaia no Kajitsu from Haruhichan:

Mihama Academy—on the surface, a closed learning environment established to nurture students who find themselves at odds with the world around them; in actuality, an orchard-cum-prison built to preserve fruit that has fallen too far from its tree.

Whatever the circumstances behind its establishment, Mihama Academy is at present home to five female students, all with their own reasons for “enrollment.” For better or worse, each girl has established a routine obliging of her current situation; life moves at an idle, yet accommodating pace within the walls of Mihama.

Yet with the arrival of the institute’s first male student, the nearly preposterously opaque Kazami Yuuji, the students at Mihama begin to fall out of step with their predetermined rhythms. Will Yuuji prove to be the element the girls around him needed to take hold of their lives once more, or will the weight of their pasts prove too steep a wall to overcome?

And in the first place, just who is Kazami Yuuji? While the true nature of the “job” he is wont to alight to at the most haphazard of moments remains shrouded in secrecy, one thing is for certain—his encroachment upon the quiet orchard known as Mihama Academy will prove itself momentous in one way or another. And of course, one cannot discount the possibility that perhaps Yuuji himself carries the weightiest past of any of the students…

Grisaia-no-Kajitsu-Anime-Key-Visual

The sequel anime of Grisaia no Kajitsu will be covering Grisaia no Meikyuu and Grisaia no Rakuen and will be airing from the end of March on Tokyo MX, Sun TV, KBS Kyoto, BS11, and AT-X, during the Spring 2015 anime season. The first episode of the anime will be a 1 hour special. More information about the upcoming anime will be revealed at a later date.

Lina Davis and Noredo Nug Wish You a Happy New Year

Tamon Ota, the character designer for Stan Lee’s Heroman series and art designer for Yoshiyuki Tomino’s Gundam: G no Reconguista manga has tweeted an image of a sketch he has done in celebration of the New Year. The image features Lina Davis from Heroman and Noredo Nug from Gundam: G no Reconguista both in cheerleader outfits jumping for joy and wishing you a Happy New Year.

Lina Davis and Noredo Nug Wish You a Happy New Year haruhichan.com Gundam G no Reconguista Heroman Tamon Ota

Gundam: G no Reconguista synopsis from Haruhichan:

The Universal Century, with its history of colonization and wars, passes into posterity, and time flows on.

Mankind enters a new age of seemingly endless peace and prosperity called the “Regild Century.”

The year is R.C. 1014. The Capital Tower, an orbital elevator, connects earth and space. Due to its role in supplying Earth’s power by transferring Photon Batteries from space, it is worshiped with a religious fervor. Bellri Zenam, a cadet in the Capital Guard formed to protect Capital Tower, is participating in his first non-simulated exercise when he is attacked by the powerful but unaffiliated “G-Self” mobile suit. He manages to capture the G-Self while piloting a “Recten” maintenance mobile suit; however, seeing the G-Self’s pilot, a young space pirate named Aida Rayhunton, stirs something within him, as does the G-Self which he was sure he’d never seen before. Why does the G-Self accept Bellri as a pilot?

Aida’s mission to attack Capital Tower. Bellri’s destiny as a chosen pilot of the G-Self. The truth which will shake the Regild Century.

It was all the beginning of the Reconguista.

Heroman synopsis from MAL:

Joey is an orphan living with his grandmother in Center City on the West Coast of the United States of America. Joey, like any other boy his age, is interested in robots and gadgets and dreams about owning a particular toy robot called a Heybo. Heybos have very advanced mechanisms and controls but with great mechanisms comes great price; the robot is too expensive for Joey, whose only source of income is a part-time job at a restaurant and he needs that money to help support himself and his grandmother.

One day, when Joey is on his way home from school, he happens upon a couple of bullies who are playing around with a Heybo. Long story short, the bullies manage to get the robot run over by a car and Joey retrieves the wreckage from a trash can. Once home, Joey fixes the robot and names it Heroman. Later that night, a thunderstorm results in Heroman getting wet and, improbably, struck by lightning. The result is amazing, Heroman grows massive in size, gets emblazoned with the colors of the American flag and responds to Joey’s commands!

At the same time in space, an alien race called the Skrugg is preparing an invasion of Earth. Now it’s up to Joey and Heroman to save Earth!

Snack Reviews: December Japanese Candy & Snack Box from Shikibox

13

Today we’ll be taking a look at Shikibox’s $30 Candy & Snack box! Shikibox is a new candy and snack subscription service that was started the 28th of October this year, and promises the absolutely hugest assortment of candies and snacks per box compared to its competitors. We got our box, so let’s take a look!

At the end of this review is a promotion code for a small bag of free snacks and candies with your Shikibox order.

The Candy & Snack box from Shikibox

Finally arrived!
Finally arrived!
WHOA. Soooo many snacks!
WHOA. Soooo many snacks!

Whoa. The size of the Shikibox is absolutely insane! We got the Candy & Snack Shikibox that costs $30 per month with free shipping (Though you can cancel at any time or choose to only buy one!). For pretty much the same price as its competitors, you really are getting more than twice as much snacks and candies. If you’ve been comparing monthly snack box subscriptions, then stop and just go for Shikibox! From my own experience, I find this box to be the most bang for its buck. I was very surprised by how fast it arrived despite being sent using SAL Economy shipping. The box was sent around the 15-16th of December from Japan and arrived at the doorstep in Sweden the 22nd of December! I was on vacation however, unable to review, so this review is a little delayed. Other than the snacks and candies in the box, you’ll also find a list of all the snacks and candies with relevant allergy information (egg, wheat etc) for the each of them.

16x UmaiboSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Umaibo Snack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Umaibo opened

Umaibo are crispy puffed corn snack sticks that come in various different flavors, and Shikibox sends you so many of these you’ll think they’re insane! I got 16 of these, and they come in pairs – two of each flavor, so 8 flavors in total! The ones I received were teriyaki, takoyaki, tonkatsu, vegetable salad, onion salad, pizza, sugar rusk and cheese flavored umaibo. The flavor is a surprise since the packages don’t really reveal the flavors, but you can always look the umaibo flavors up if you’re not up for a surprise. Umaibo flavorings are surprisingly accurate and always come with an undertone of puffed corn. The Teriyaki one greatly reminds of Sukiyaki (hot pot meat), which is very close to Teriyaki (grilled meat), and the pizza one was somewhat cheesy and even had a smoky taste of salami.

“Baby Star” fried noodle snackSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Baby Star fried noodle snack

Really savory and crispy! Tastes just like ramen but with a dash of soy sauce. One of my favorites of this box and a potato crisp/chips killer. If there was a dagashi store close to me I’d have bought their entire stock of this snack. Dagashi are inexpensive snacks, thus being very popular among Japanese children and teenagers! For Japanese adults however, they are a fond childhood memory.

2x Kameda Age Ichiban crackersSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Kameda Age Ichiban crackers

This rice cracker is somewhat salty. Tastes mainly of puffed rice but has a very distinct undertone of soy sauce. I wish I had more!

2x Pota Pota Yaki crackersSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Pota pota yaki crackers

This cracker confused my taste buds! When you first bite into the cracker you’re met with a somewhat salty soy-saucy taste that quickly fades out to reveal a sweet taste. You thought that this was the end, but nope, the salty taste comes back and fades away again for the sweeter taste. During this trip of saltiness and sweetness there’s the same puffed rice taste as the Kameda Age Ichiban cracker. No I’m not crazy, and nope, my tongue isn’t broken!

4x Lotte “Sasha” chocolatesSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Sasha chocolates

Chocolate and Maccha green tea! Maccha (Sometimes also spelled Matcha) is Japanese for finely milled green tea. The deliciousness of darker chocolate infused with the somewhat bitter, fragrant taste of green tea. Makes a great combination and has already been a favorite of mine for quite some time.

Meiji lemon tablets and chocolatesSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Small candies

The lemon candies have a smooth dragée on the outside and some kind of powder candy on the inside. Tastes just like lemon candies are supposed to taste like – A distinctive, somewhat sour, lemon taste.

The chocolates are pretty much Smarties! Smooth dragée on the outside, milk chocolate on the inside.

Coris Fue Ramune whistle candies, cola flavorSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Coris Whistle Candy

These candies are pretty fun! They come with a toy and the candies can be used as a whistle by blowing through the small hole. The taste was somewhat boring, since it did taste of cola but didn’t have that sharp sour taste you sort of expect out of a cola candy.

I wonder what I’ll get!
A green ring, my expectations were way too high ;-;

Meiji Watapachi grape-flavored popping candySnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Meiji Watapachi grape-flavored popping candy

Ow, my mouth! This candy consists of grape-flavored cotton candy with sour grape candy powder and small grape-flavored pop rocks inside. The cotton candy and pop rocks are sweet, with the grape candy powder adding a tangy sour grape taste. It’s a pretty great combination and definitely something I’d like to have again!

Konpeito sugar candiesSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Konpeito

Konpeito are traditional candies that were brought to Japan back in 1569 by a Portuguese Christian missionary. The Japanese were quick to learn the sugar refining techniques and were able to produce konpeito on their own, but as the sugar refining process required a lot of sugar, it remained expensive and therefore very exclusive for a long time. It wasn’t until the Meiji period (1868-1912) when konpeitō became the “standard” candy in Japan.

Traditional konpeito are often colored in various different colors, but they only come in one taste – Sugar and nothing else. Modern, flavored variations do exist however, with flavorings such as strawberry. The taste isn’t anything extraordinary really, it’s just a fun thing to try because of them being traditional! The konpeito I received were of the modern kind, with mild flavorings of fruits. The green ones tasted of watermelon, orange ones tasted of oranges and pink ones tasted of strawberry.

Orion “chocolate” cigarettesSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Orion chocolate cigarettes

I expected chocolate cigarettes, but the candies inside of the package were actual candy candies, not chocolate candies. The taste is very unique, with slight hints of mint and chocolate and lots of different flavors that I can’t describe. You really have to taste this by yourself to understand. As I really can’t describe the flavor, I’d give it a 8/10 – It was surprisingly refreshing!

Tohato Caramel CornSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Tohato Caramel Corn

Imagine cheese puffs/balls, but with caramel instead of cheese flavoring. That’s exactly what these taste like! Sweet, but not too sweet, and a very mild puffed corn flavor. Crispy, but yet they melt in the mouth. These snacks are not just snacks, they’re also commonly used as cereal in Japan! They come in different flavors, such as pineapple, tea-flavored chocolate, almond and strawberry, I got the original caramel flavor.

2x Fruit-flavored chewing gumsSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Fruit Chewing Gums

These cute, tiny packages each contain 6 small fruit-flavored chewing gum balls! They taste of their respective fruits, with a gentle sourness. The taste disappears after 2-3 minutes of chewing, which is pretty normal for fruit-flavored chewing gums. Chew 3-4 gums if you want to blow huge bubbles!

Tamago Boro egg biscuit ballsSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Tamago Boro

I’ve had these a lot of times since the Asian supermarket I frequent has them! These small biscuit balls have a sweet, fragrant flavor of… I have no idea. When you chew the balls they immediately turn into powder that melts in your mouth, releasing the flavor. The flavor is very special, another one of those things that you have to try by yourself! I’ve eaten a loooot of things, but Tamago Boro still remains on my list of things that have a completely unique, undescribable flavor.

Takenoko no Ysato & Kinoko no yama chocolate biscuit snacksSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Mushroom and bamboo shoot

These cute snacks are shaped like bamboo shoots (Takenoko no Ysato) and mushrooms (Kinoko no Yama). They taste the same however, the difference lies in within the biscuit parts of the snacks! The mushrooms have a crispy biscuit, whereas the bamboo shoots have got a much spongier but still crispy biscuit. The chocolate on them definitely belongs to the darker kind of chocolate, so no cheap chocolate. I loved them!

Masuya Onigiri crackersSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Onigiri Crackers

These onigiri-shaped rice crackers are so big in relative to their package! I expected lots of smaller ones, instead two really big crackers came out of the package to my surprise. Crispy crackers with a salty soy sauce flavor and mild roasted seaweed undertones, delicious!

Kyabetsu Taro snacksSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com round snack balls

These are round and crispy puffed snacks with a sprinkle of spices, roasted seaweed and… A dash of Okonomiyaki sauce? For those who haven’t tried Okonomiyaki or had Okonomiyaki sauce, it greatly reminds of Worcestershire sauce – Peppery, and sort of tastes like a combination between barbecue sauce and soy sauce with a dash of vinegar. The puffs are salty, savory and have a gentle, sour taste. Despite the name being Kyabetsu Taro, with kyabetsu being Japanese for cabbage, this does not contain cabbage, nor taste of it at all. It’s an awesome, unique flavor and I completely agree with what the frog on the package says. “It’s delicious!!”

2x Meiji Kajyu fruit gummiesSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Fruit Gummies

I’ve always loved gummy candies, and these are no exception! These fruit gums are natural, with real fruit juice and non-artificial food coloring (That’s what it says on the packaging I think, my Japanese isn’t that great). They’re very chewy and taste of their respective fruits realistically! Fruity with balanced sweetness and sourness.

7x Tirol chocolates

Miku approves~
Miku approves~

Chocolate lover? Shikibox has got you covered! Tirol (Pronounced Chiroru in Japan) makes inexpensive assorted chocolates in Japan, with a wide variety of flavors – 118 apparently!  I got 7 chocolates.

White & Cookie – Oh my god this one is great. It’s like eating an Oreo, but half white chocolate, half Oreo cookie.

BIS Milk Choco – Milk chocolate with a crunchy biscuit inside. I got two of these, one blue and one orange. Different package, same contents!

Really milky milk chocolate – Is milk chocolate not enough for you? This praline consists of milk chocolate on the outside and a white, concentrated milk filling on the inside. Sort of like the Kinder chocolate bars! The milk core is so milky it almost reminds me of Brie cheese.

Chocolate & Almond – Milk chocolate praline with a sugar-glazed almond inside.

Peanut butter – This one is so great. It’s a praline consisting of peanut butter white chocolate, with a center of… Something gummy-ish that’s slightly sweet. I need an entire bag of these! ;-;

Tirol original chocolate – Milk chocolate praline with a sticky and almost chewy coffee-flavored nougat filling. Delicious and chewy!

2x Kabayaki-san taro & 2x Yakiniku-san taro jerky snacksSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Yakiniku-san taro and Kabayaki-san Taro

These snacks consist of a slice of fish jerky with flavoring. The Kabayaki one tastes of Kabayaki, and the same goes for the Yakiniku one! Kabayaki is unagi eel that has been dipped into sweet soy sauce before being grilled, and Yakiniku is the Japanese word for grilled meat! After chewing them for like 10-15 seconds, the kabayaki and yakiniku flavors disappear and the fish jerky flavor is revealed. The fish jerky is apparently supposed to be cod jerky, but I found it to resemble squid jerky more than cod. I personally love squid jerky and have had it a lot of times before, but it might just not be your thing. I have to say that it’s a lot less weird than you would imagine though, and that it’s worth trying!

Other than that, it’s sort of hard to bite off and to chew, but after chewing for a little it softens up.

3x Bourbon Lumonde crêpe cookiesSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Bourbon Lumonde wafers

These are rolled “crêpe” wafers covered with… something? I have no idea what it is, but the frosting sort of reminds me of chocolate and caramel. The subtle sweetness of the frosting goes really well together with the crispy and airy wafer roll on the inside! They’re really crispy and thin so the frosting sort of keeps the crumbles from going everywhere. It’s really oishii (Japanese for delicious)!

3x Morinaga Koeda chocolate sticksSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Morinaga branches

Koeda means twigs in Japanese, and that’s exactly what these chocolate sticks resemble!  Each small package contains 4 small sticks, consisting of small rice puffs and milk chocolate. And that’s exactly what they taste like. A smooth milk chocolate taste with a distinct flavor of rice puffs.

Suppai lemon chewing gumsSnack Reviews December Japanese Snack Subscription from Shikibox Haruhichan.com Russian roulette gums

Suppai lemon chewing gums are basically Russian roulette, but… Completely safe. Though your mouth, tongue and sanity might suffer for a bit, as one of these three innocent-looking chewing gums is extremely sour. Guess which one I got on my first try? Yuup, just my luck. My mouth died for a bit, the gum ball was absolutely stuffed with sour powder x.x The taste disappears quickly, so this is more of a novelty thing, not something that you would buy to actually have something to chew on.

Once again, if you’re considering buying or subscribing to a Japanese candy and snack box service, I would definitely recommend Shikibox’s Candy & Snack box! It has the biggest quantity (Around 3x bigger) and variety (40 different snacks) while retaining high-quality candies and snacks and the same $30 price as its competitors. By my own experience, this snack box has the best value out of all the snack boxes I’ve tried and seen. I’m honestly quite speechless, $30 including shipping for this pile of snacks is an absolute bargain, and if you feel like having some Japanese snacks, this is what I would say you should go for. Shikibox also offers other boxes, like their Battle Box that costs $15 – A smaller box with different snacks, a Trial Box that costs $13 – A smaller assortment that samples every one of their boxes (Candy & Snack + Battle Box + Tea Box) and a fancy Tea Box that costs $50, with a large variation of green teas and Japanese snacks that go well with tea.

Right now we also have a promotion code for a small bag of free snacks and candies with your Shikibox order! The promotion code is “Haruhichan” – Note that you have to send them the promo code and your order details through the “Contact Us” form after your purchase for the small bag of freebies to be added to your order.  They will, however, be adding a promo code box at checkout once they get back from their Winter break to simplify the process!

Well, that sums up the Candy & Snack box from Shikibox! What candy from this post do you now want to try? And if you’ve tried Japanese snacks or candy before, which ones have you tried? Let us know in the comments below!

Tomoki’s Top 10 Anime of 2014

19

Tomoki's Top Ten Anime 2014 Haruhichan.com

In what has been another eventful year for anime, we have seen both ends of the spectrum; both disappointments and pleasant surprises. From comedies to action-packed thrillers, 2014 has done us the justice of giving us a broad array of shows to admire and/or nitpick over. But which of these shows were my personal favorites? Well, let us take a look in the list!

It should be mentioned however that the list is that of personal preferences among the shows I have seen. Those I have missed simply wouldn’t be present. For those which are not listed but deserve a spot, feel free to mention them in the comments. Without further ado, Tomoki’s top 10 anime of 2014!

#10: Sabagebu!

Sabagebu! Survival Game Club 2014 Anime Haruhichan.com

Do not be fooled by its cutesy art style and entirely female cast – being based on a shoujo manga, one can expect Sabagebu! to be nothing more than your generic slice of life comedy with cute girls doing cute things. There is certainly more to it than that! This summer entry was one of the more surprisingly good shows of the year. Its story circles around a new student named Momoka Sonokawa who recently transferred to a highschool in which she is immediately recruited into the school’s “survival games club” – (against her will, might I add). A survival games club is something like a paintball club.

There is not much in the way of story beyond this, as the show drives you through a series of skits involving over the top (yet imaginary) gun violence as the students partake in various survival game scenarios. The show caters to gun otakus primarily and is a fun watch. There is little to no redeeming value in the show, but that’s okay. Being a fan of the type of humor in the “action” scenes, I thoroughly enjoyed the show. It works as a great filler between more serious shows.

#9: Barakamon

Barakamon 2014 Anime Haruhichan.com

Being one of the more popular shows of the year, many would have at least heard of Barakamon already. It focuses on the story of calligrapher Seishuu Handa – a hot headed young man who is sent to a rural town in an island to cool down work on his art in peace. Being a city boy, he is unused to the closeness and hospitality of small town folk and through the course of the show he softens, befriends one of the local youngsters, and comes to terms with his inner turmoil – discovering not only a new meaning in his work, but also discovering himself. The show balances comedy and emotional development and drama fairly well – and is a fun-filled yet heart warming adventure.

Being a summer entry, it had many shows to compete with, yet it held its own and overall deserves a spot on the list of my favorite shows of the year.

#8: Free! Eternal Summer

Free Eternal Summer 2014 Anime Haruhichan.com

Will there ever be a list Tomoki makes in which Free! isn’t mentioned? The answer is yes. He would never add it into a list of disappointments. This here is a show we can all get behind (pardon the pun). It is absolutely marvellous, and it certainly manages to explore new waters in terms of anime. Alright, that’s enough homoerotic swimming related puns for the year. Let’s get serious.

Yet another anime that aired during the summer (and rightly so, considering the name) Free! Eternal Summer is the second season of the popular sports anime. Interesting how it’s called a sports anime when the primary cast are sporting next to nothing. (Dammit, I promised myself that would be the last pun.) In any case, the storyline continues where it left off, and we are thrust right back into the teen angst and drama of being in a high school swimming club. The show depicts character development, the spirit of sports and competition, the values that come with friendship, and it does all this with excellent animation – particularly the water animation during race scenes.

Despite the connotations that come with it, Free! is in fact a great sports anime and all jokes aside, I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the genre.

#7: Isshuukan Friends

Isshuukan Friends One Week Friends Anime 2014 Haruhichan.com

Never before had a show made me tear up in the very first episode – and it only ever happened once after. While I’m not sure how this fits the shonen demographic rather than shoujo – Isshukan Friends (also known as One Week Friends) is another one of the surprisingly enjoyable shows of the year. The story revolves around Hase Yuuki, a fairly average (yet very caring) highschool boy who notices the quiet, pretty, intelligent yet lonely Kaori Fujimiya in his class. While she is off-standish at first, he discovers the reason behind her behaviour and the two slowly grow close.

A slow paced and beautifully animated show that released during the spring season that I would recommend to fans of slice of life or drama anime. While the show may disappoint those who wish for a concrete conclusion, the manga extends beyond the anime and there is yet hope for a second season!

#6: Knights of Sidonia

Knights of Sidonia Anime 2014 Haruhichan.com

What some refer to as “that Netflix anime” or others refer to as “Attack On Titan in space”, Knights of Sidonia (also known as Sidonia no Kishi) should certainly not be reduced to such a basal degree. Knights of Sidonia boasts a dark, unique sci-fi world, teeming with lore in terms of alien threats, synthetic beings, an interesting conspiracy and a varied cast of characters.

Its most jarring quality however is easily its animation style. The show is almost entirely CGI, and uses an animation style that can be compared with the cel-shading seen in several video games. While this may be a deterrent for some, it greatly adds to the show’s futuristic yet foreign and unfamiliar atmosphere – something it manages well. Thrilling, interesting, and gory – the show is going to please sci-fi fans for sure. A second season is also in the works!

#5: Kill La Kill

Kill La Kill Anime 2014 Haruhichan.com

Alright, there may be a little cheating involved by including this one but it can be justified. While Kill La Kill began in 2013, it didn’t finish until early 2014. As it wasn’t in any list last year, it only felt right to have it be a nominee in this year’s list. Furthermore, its OVA released this year, so technically we’re good on all fronts. But about the show itself.

In the anime community, everyone and their mother has heard of Kill La Kill. (I’m sorry for that horrible, horrible pun.) It sounds like a classic revenge story with tons of gratuitous nudity and violence. While the nudity and violence remains gratuitous for the most part, the show was helmed by the same creators as Gurren Lagann, and it contains a far deeper message than just what can be seen on the surface. It is an intensely emotional tale, and some speculate that the show is in fact a metaphor for female adolescence and coming of age. Of course others argue that the only thing deep about the show is the cleavage.

While this cannot be discussed in depth without adding spoilers, it is safe to say that Kill La Kill was one of the most popular series’ in recent years and it deserved a spot on the list because I certainly enjoyed it.

#4: Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul 2014 Anime Haruhichan.com

It cannot be expressed enough how much I wanted this to be at the top of my list. Remember back when I said only one other show had made me tear up in the first episode? This is that other show. The amazing soundtrack, the masterful voice acting work, the brutal yet still tasteful gore (I swear, these puns are going to get chewed out… See what I did there?)

If one can stomach the gore, I recommend Tokyo Ghoul to fans of thrillers. It certainly has its flaws, as I’ve addressed in its very own review, but overall this was a thoroughly enjoyable watch and has gained a sizeable fan following over the course of its summer airing. Plenty of Ken Kaneki cosplayers can be expected at the next few anime conventions! And the flame will be fuelled for some time as another season is coming soon!

#3: Aldnoah.Zero

Aldnoah.Zero Anime 2014 Haruhichan.com

Aldnoah.Zero is the kind of show you’ll either love or hate. Fortunately there are many more who love it rather than hate. Taking place in the not-too-distant future, the world has reached a treaty with a superior, alien race, however the treaty is broken and an all out war breaks out. With an interesting slew of characters and deeply dramatic political intrigue, Aldnoah.Zero was one of the shows I deemed were ones to look out for back when its first episode aired during the summer season and it did not disappoint.

It is with heavy heart I place it at third, as this too is one I would have deemed my favorite show of the year, however its main gripe for me was the incredibly unlikeable protagonist. Although I personally loved it, the ending of the first season was thought to be controversial as well. Its next season is coming soon however!

#2: Zankyou no Terror

Zankyou No Terror 2014 Anime Haruhichan.com

Brought to us by the same creators as Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bepop, there comes the story of young terrorists Nine and Twelve in the anime Zankyou no Terror (also known as Terror in Resonance). In what I consider to be one of the more mature and serious shows, this psychological thriller takes its viewers for quite the ride. The non-linear story features short flashback sequences that slowly unveil the protagonists’ dark past and motivations for their terrorist activities.

The poster itself is controversial and the show is intense – I personally had to marathon it as I could not stop once I began. Its eleven episode summer span kept viewers on the edge of their seats throughout the duration and the bittersweet ending evoked the kinds emotions I did not think the show would. Easily one of my favorite shows of the year, despite how dark it is.

#1: Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun Anime 2014 Haruhichan.com

In terms of enjoyment there was one anime that I enjoyed beyond all others. For reasons both simple as well as personal, this was the show I had the best time watching – this is in part because of the company in which I was but also because the show is genuinely fun.

The story revolves around Chiyo Sakura, a young higschool girl smitten by the tall, stoic Nozaki Umetarou. In her efforts to confess to him, she somehow winds up as his assistant, as it is revealed he is the author of a piece in a monthly shoujo manga. With their friends tied into the mix, the group go through a multitude of misadventures, each character unique and funny in their own way – the dynamics all being amusing, with scenarios that are both engaging as well as ridiculous.

Fans of heavy romance may not like the lack of drama in the show but the “shipping” is certainly there, and watching your favorite pair interact is an absolute joy. Overall, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Monthly Girl’s Nozaki-kun) is an entertaining and lively experience – and that is exactly what anime should be. For this reason, it is my favorite anime of the year 2014.

Well, that just about wraps up my list for the top ten anime of 2014. Without a doubt there were shows I missed, but these were the ones I liked among the ones I watched – as stated in the introduction. So, what were your favorite shows of the year 2014? Agree with Tomoki? Or think he has horrible taste? In either case, let us know in the comments section below! Here’s to another year of being glorious weeaboos, happy new year!

Honorable mentions:

Noragami, Nisekoi, Hamatora, Selector Infected WIXOSS, No Game No Life, Hitsugi no Chaika, Ping Pong The Animation, and Akame ga Kill.
