But after his mother, who was also his instructor, passed away, he had a mental breakdown while performing at a recital that resulted in him no longer being able to hear the sound of his piano even though his hearing was perfectly fine. Even two years later, Kosei hasn’t touched the piano and views the world in monotone, and without any flair or color. He was content at living out his life with his good friends Tsubaki and Watari until, one day, a girl changed everything. Miyazono Kaori is a pretty, free spirited violinist whose playing style reflects her personality. Kaori helps Kosei return to the music world and show that it should be free and mold breaking unlike the structured and rigid style Kosei was used to.

Tokyo Ghoul Root A Ken Kaneki Official Poster Art Haruhichan.com

Title: Tokyo Ghoul √A

Japanese Title: 東京喰種√A

Episodes: 12

Animation Studio: Studio Pierrot

Genre: Shonen, Action, Horror, Thriller, Supernatural

Highly anticipated series Tokyo Ghoul releases its second season only a couple months after the first – and with that cliffhanger ending from the last, we’re glad it’s finally out! Given the name Tokyo Ghoul √A (Tokyo Ghoul Root A), this season, although a continuation of the last, veers off from the story of the manga. While this came as an unpleasant shock to many, there are some who are curious as to what it means for the show. The fact that its written by the original creator allows room for some hope to shine through. It may yet be just as good; possibly better?

To start off on a relatively negative note, one will definitely ask how a show manages to go from having the best opening from last year to having such a boring one this season. As it’s the first aspect of the show one notices, it should give one a sense of excitement, foreboding, or at least be representative of the show itself in some way. It can be argued however that the relatively mellow and sombre tone of the song is meant to mirror the Kaneki that is now at peace with himself – at peace with the fact that he is a ghoul. The track certainly manages to deliver in that regard. The animation for it still leaves a lot to desire, however once again, the relative motionlessness of the animation could mirror the generally more peaceful inner consciousness of Ken Kaneki. The first opening could represent the chaos and turmoil that tore him apart as he struggled with his new self in the first season, while this opening could represent the eventual acceptance. Furthermore, the emotional state and seeing inside his head (as shown in episode 12 of the first season) is a constantly running theme in Tokyo Ghoul. The choice of the opening could in fact be a poetic one.

Screen of Tokyo Ghoul √A opening
Screen of Tokyo Ghoul √A opening

In terms of the content of the episode itself, it’s an entirely different story. It continues exactly where the first season left off, and our man Ken Kaneki is as badass is ever. Fans who were waiting for the shift in Ken’s personality will not be disappointed, as the action sequences with him are phenomenal.

Filled with fight scenes, sweet visuals, great use of soundtrack and minimal but tasteful dialogue, Tokyo Ghoul Root A started with a bang – almost literally. Several old faces are seen while a slew of new ones are introduced. As the battle between Anteiku and Aogiri rages on, humans are caught somewhere in the middle of this war they cannot even comprehend and Kaneki is the center of it. The episode could have made a great last episode for the previous season as well, as its ending was just as ambiguous yet exciting as the last, teasing the audience with more to come and ending with a twist. Without giving too much away, the episode is sure to impress fans, so as long as it is watched with an open mind and one doesn’t scrutinize or compare with the manga too much.

Ayato and Kaneki

Answering a few questions while creating several more (some of which are questions about the multiple costume changes Kaneki makes without anyone really understanding where or how) Tokyo Ghoul Root A is the much needed climax we needed for the first season of Tokyo Ghoul.

Some feared Kaneki would go back to being a weakling after one fight and the show would start from scratch, but this certainly was not the case. If you’re a fan of the series, Tokyo Ghoul Root A is definitely worth watching. Barring the underwhelming opening, the episode was excellent.

How did you like the first episode of Tokyo Ghoul Root ALet us know in the comments section! Until then, Tomoki the Toronto Ghoul signing out!

First Impressions: Kantai Collection (KanColle)

Title (English): Fleet Girls Collection: KanColle

Title (Japanese): 艦隊これくしょん -艦これ-

Animation Studio: Diomedea

Genres: Action, Sci-Fi, Military, (Slice of life?)

Episodes: ?

If you’ve been following what games are popular in Japan, you’ll probably notice Kantai Collection being one of the latest games to get Japan hyped up. Kantai Collection (referred to from now on as KanColle) is a free-to-play card-based browser game developed by Kadokawa Games that has split off into multiple different media forms including manga, light novels, and now an anime along with a PS Vita game in the pipeline for later this year. This game puts girls that use the power of World War II ships against another fleet. The game is based heavily on RNG (Random Number Generator), and battles usually come down to having a high-level fleet, good equipment and more than a little luck. The anime was announced back in 2013, with a projected release date of Fall 2014. However, it was pushed back to Winter 2015. Now that Winter 2015 has arrived, it’s time to for the rest of the world to experience KanColle in anime form.

The story of this version of KanColle is this: Aliens called ‘Abyssals’ have taken over the seas and laid waste to human ships, effectively taking away humans power in the sea. The only ones capable of taking on these aliens are fleet girls born with the power of ships of old. Using their outfitted weapons with the ability of their respective ships they fight to regain control of the ocean. This story follow Fubuki, a special class destroyer, as she enters basic training at a naval base. She enters the Third Torpedo Squadron. On her first day, she meets her fellow squadmates along with other girls including Akagi, whom Fubuki admires. Akagi is part of the elite 1st Carrier Task Force, a squad renowned for winning many tough battles unscathed. Before she can get it any training, she is called out to a sortie with her squad against enemy destroyers. Since Fubuki has no combat experience, she soon becomes a liability with her squadmates forced to bail her out with the help of Akagi’s squad. Unwilling to be a burden on her squadmates, she resolves to train hard and one day be worthy enough to be placed alongside Akagi.

Prior to the first episode, the producer for KanColle said that the anime would be roughly 70% moe/slice of life with the other 30% being action. Depending on what you were initially expecting out of this anime, this may or may not surprise you. Personally, I’m drawing comparisons of this anime to Girls und Panzer, since they seem to be very similar in their execution. I’m not expecting this anime to be too story-heavy considering the source material, so I would suggest to also not expect an amazing story. Of course, it could still surprise me like Girls und Panzer did. The art style looks nice to me, and the animation is decent. The better animated parts are the CG action parts. CG just seems to work better during action scenes as it looks a lot more fluid than hand-drawn animation. The soundtrack is all right so far, but both the OP and ED were not in the first episode so I can’t judge them yet. This anime is going to bring out the versatility of the voice actresses involved as some of them play up to nine characters. Rina Hidaka (Silica from Sword Art Online) has the most roles from the game, voicing eleven characters. Seven of Ayane Sakura’s (Mika Shimotsuki from Psycho-Pass) characters appear in the first episode. I’m looking forward to playing mix and match with the voice actresses.

Overall, if you’re looking for cute girls with a side of action, this is for you. Like most video game adaptations, this show is more meant for fans of the game as they are more knowledgeable with the world. However, I still think newcomers can still watch this as long as you don’t expect a groundbreaking story to come out of it. If none of the above conditions satisfy you, then this show won’t be your cup of tea. I personally will continue watching it, if only because I will be surrounded by it. I know a few KanColle players and they’ll reveal every detail about the anime anyway.

For those who have watched the first episode, what are your thoughts on it? Let me know in the comments!

Kobun Shizuno will return to direct the film and Takeharu Sakurai will write the script. Katsuo Ono will again to compose the music. Here’s a synopsis of the movie from Detective Conan World:

A certain world-famous painting was to be auctioned at an auctionhouse in New York frequented by the rich. The piece of art was one of van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’, a masterpiece thought to be destroyed in Japan. Jirokichi Suzuki fights off all bidders by putting forward $300 million to buy it, stating that he intends to collect all seven of the ‘Sunflowers’ paintings that are scattered around the world. It will be given its greatest exhibition ever in the Japanese museum ‘Lake Rock’, which boasts iron-clad security, he announces live on worldwide news being watched by Conan and Ran. He has collected seven specialists known as the ‘Seven Samurai’ to protect the Sunflowers, but just as they are about to appear, Kaitou Kid suddenly shows up! He declares war, stating that he will steal the painting no matter what, before vanishing. Why would Kid make such a statement when he usually only goes after Big Jewels?

And just as everyone starts to panic, a high-school detective appears on the scene, having heard rumors of Kid’s appearance: Shinichi Kudo. Then, the ‘White Shadow’ launches an aerial assault on the passenger plane carrying the ‘Sunflowers’ to Japan…The curtain opens on an art mystery that blends truth and lies, focused upon a peerless treasure…
