Anime Review: Inugami-San to Nekoyama-San

1

Title: Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san

Length: 12 episodes (3 minutes per episode)

Genre: Comedy, School, Shoujo Ai

Summary: The story revolves around Nekoyama Suzu, a timid, shy tsundere girl who loves dogs, and Inugami Yachiyo, a super masochistic, air-headed, friendly girl who loves cats. One day, after a fateful meeting, the two find themselves attracted to each other. In response to Inugami’s instinctive approaches, Nekoyama is always bashful. Their friend Aki has to work hard to make jabs at some of the situations of the two, and also to stop Inugami from going berserk.

The pacing is important in any media but with 3 minutes per episode it’s crucial to get it right. Overall Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san wasn’t too fast or too slow maintaining an even pace but several episodes (noticeably the first episode and the finale) had stood out. The first episode, for example, had a very fast pacing, it was snappy and didn’t hold back. Which in this case was a good thing because with introductions done in a matter of seconds you get to move to the story itself and judge the dynamic between these characters.

Inugami-san_to_Nekoyama-san_02

The dynamic is simple but entertaining. Inugami is very impulsive and sometimes goes into the ‘raging dyke’ mode, while Nekoyama is very shy and has issues with her confidence. To balance them out and to stop Inugami from going too far we have Aki, tsukkomi, who doesn’t love any animals and behaves like a human. Sometimes people perceive her as Inugami’s owner because she is the only one who can get her in line. Yachiyo uses it to her masochistic advantage from time to time.

During the course of  Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san we get to meet a lot of new characters for a 12 3-minute episodes series which causes some of those characters to be left way underdeveloped. On the other hand, they do add some variety and put a different perspective on the main couple.  All characters play off each other quite well.

One of the more permanent additions is an early addition – Nezu Mikine. She is in Inugami’s class but Yachiyo hadn’t noticed her until she bumped into her desk. They hit it off right away because they both like lewd things. That introduction put a strain in Inugami’s relationship with Nekoyama but soon Nezu introduces her ‘wife’ Ushiwaka Yukiji (the animals for this couple are mouse and cow). Relieved Suzu accepts her as a fellow shortie and they connect because they have a similar type ‘tall and lazy’.

The others are Suzu’s sister, Sarutobi Sora and Torikai Hibari (monkey and bird respectively).

Nekoyama’s jealousy is a big theme for the series. Inugami is overly-friendly and tends to flirt a lot which doesn’t go well with Suzu. In the manga Nekoyama’s lack of confidence is more evident and is more likely to be the underlying cause of her jealousy. But anime still does a good job at depicting this as an issue that main couple has to deal with as their relationship progresses.

Inugami-san_to_Nekoyama-san_03

While there are no definitive statements about Suzu and Yachiyo’s relationship in  Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san it’s really hard to call it a subtext. First of all, they are obviously physically attracted to each other (lewd dreams on both sides, gazing and considering each other hot). Secondly, they do talk about feelings in a way couples do. They even had a fight because Nekoyama thought that her cat-like appearance is the only thing that Inugami is interested in. And even while they were fighting they both strongly opposed to the idea of breaking up.

Of course there is still a lot of teasing for other pairings. All the characters are rather ‘shippable’ so if you like to have multiple pairings  Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san will provide.

There is a considerable amount of fanservice in the series. Inugami has a lot of fetishes combined with manipulative nature and Nekoyama has a good imagination (especially when she has a fever or after she had some catnip tea) so we see them ‘hot and bothered’ quite often. There is even foot-licking scene. Nezu is also quite lewd:

Inugami-san_to_Nekoyama-san_04

As a comedy the series is well made. The jokes are funny though they are not very complex and rely more on characters’ personalities than on some ingenious play of words.

There were some complaints about graphic and character design amongst viewers. The manga is indeed much softer and the character design is more subtle and refined. But I personally didn’t have a problem with how characters looked in anime. The graphic wasn’t very good but it wasn’t downright atrocious or unwatchable either.

Plus, as usual, we got some beautiful end-cards from well-known yuri artists.

Inugami-san_to_Nekoyama-san_05
The voice-acting was good. The only time I was taken out by it was when Inugami asked Sarutobi to repeat her dere moment because for some reason she did it in Russian (and I have to say that Sumire Uesaka nailed the pronunciation).

Verdict:  Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san is by no means the greatest anime of all times but it is very entertaining and in my opinion is a must for any yurifan who loves comedy with a good amount of romance. It’s well made and even though it’s short it provides a lot of funny and touching moments and wraps up on a very nice note.

Whatever the circumstances behind its establishment, Mihama Academy is at present home to five female students, all with their own reasons for “enrollment.” For better or worse, each girl has established a routine obliging of her current situation; life moves at an idle, yet accommodating pace within the walls of Mihama.

Yet with the arrival of the institute’s first male student, the nearly preposterously opaque Kazami Yuuji, the students at Mihama begin to fall out of step with their predetermined rhythms. Will Yuuji prove to be the element the girls around him needed to take hold of their lives once more, or will the weight of their pasts prove too steep a wall to overcome?

Figure Review: Yuan Ji – Elegance Series

1

Greetings to all you figurine collectors out there. The team over at E2046 have revealed their beautifully crafted and impressively detailed Yuan-Ji figurine from their original Elegance series. This figurine is yours to admire and can currently be pre-ordered.

Yuan-Ji was trained to be a protector of royalty ever since her birth. While she did become a servant of a princess, their relationship evolved from servant and master to sister and sister. Thanks to this close relationship, she is the most trusted of all servants.  Despite her ‘foreign origins’, Yuan-Ji excels at Chinese Quinggong and has used these martial arts to get her and her princess out of danger many times.

Haruhichan.com Yuan Ji prepainted

At a first glance, the beautiful floral patterns and golden jewelry pop out. The inspiration seems to take from both Chinese and Indian traditions. Although the design seems eastern, she has a very western appearance to her but that can be credited to her ‘foreign origins’. The usage of light blue, gold, and white make it easy on our eyes and gives an appearance of purity and innocence.

Haruhichan.com Yuan Ji prepainted 10

The fine details of her jewelry are astounding. From her chest-piece down to her leg-piece, you can see the minuscule designs that really showcase E2046’s ability to impossibly add details to very small areas.

There’s even detail to the small and seemingly insignificant roof-base that she’s sitting on. All of the small details really come together to make the entire figurine look beautiful.

Haruhichan.com Yuan Ji prepainted 4 Haruhichan.com Yuan Ji prepainted 8

From her side profiles, you’re able to see her in a rather relaxed and modest composure. There’s a sense of innocence that radiates from her. It’s nearly impossible to take your eyes off this angelic beauty.

Love Live! School Idol Project is an original anime produced by Sunrise studios that aired in January 2013. The conception of the anime project started in 2010 by Dengeki G’s Magazine. The editors wanted the project to be heavily influenced by fans, such as the costumes, hairstyles and names. Throughout this process, a manga of the project simply called Love Live! began in early 2012 by Sakurako Kimino and Arumi Tokita. The next part in the project was the anime series, followed by this app and an OVA. The second season titled Love Live! School Idol Project 2nd Season started airing earlier this year.

Love Live! School Idol Project 5th Anniversary Project Movie Announced

Love Live! School Idol Project synopsis of the series from Haruhichan:

Otonokizaka High School stands on the border of three cities: Akihabara—a pop culture mecca that’s evolving by the minute; Kanda—a conservative, cultured city where history and tradition reign supreme; and Jinbo—a quiet area reserved for a more mature, sophisticated population. Amidst this culture clash, the school now faces closure due to the enrollment of fewer and fewer students.

With the school planning to close within three years, nine female students come together with one thing in mind—form a pop idol group to revive the school’s popularity and keep it from shutting down. “In order to protect our beloved school, there’s only one thing we can do… become pop stars!”

1 year after the SAO incident, Kirito is approached by Seijiro Kikuoka from Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications Department “VR Division” with a rather peculiar request.

That was an investigation on the “Death Gun” incident that occurred in the gun and steel filled VRMMO called Gun Gale Online (GGO). “Players who are shot by a mysterious avatar with a jet black gun lose their lives even in the real world…” Failing to turn down Kikuoka’s bizarre request, Kirito logs in to GGO even though he is not completely convinced that the virtual world could physically affect the real world.

Kirito wanders in an unfamiliar world in order to gain any clues about the “Death Gun.” Then, a female sniper named Sinon who owns a gigantic “Hecate II” rifle extends Kirito a helping hand. With Sinon’s help, Kirito decides to enter the “Bullet of Bullets,” a large tournament to choose the most powerful gunner within the realm of GGO, in hopes to become the target of the “Death Gun” and make direct contact with the mysterious avatar.
