Winter Anime 2013/2014 Chart V1.0

3

The season of Fall, or Autumn, is just around the corner trying to have us do all the raking. While we are slowly anticipating the new season, its always good to look further ahead and what we have is Winter. Zana from Neregate has released the first anime chart for Winter 2013/2014.

Version 1.0 is available for viewing but it is rather lacklustre since we are still months away from Winter. Since we are so far away the information presented in the chart, the number, additions and removals of anime, may not be final and can change as we approach the end of the year. So don’t get too angry when Moe Anime #563 is delayed by 2 days and doesn’t contain actual moe.

For the chart we have and the information we know so far, here are some anime to keep an look out for:

0

With over a week until the much anticipated 2013 Tokyo Game Show in Chiba Japan, Sony has streamed their pre-show conference announcing many extreme surprises. The 2013 Tokyo Game Show starts next week while this week was Sony’s press conference for the event. Covering both the Japanese and Asian regions the conference was announced to have big surprises. The two hour conference focuses on all aspects of PlayStation from the current generation of PlayStation 3, the ever so powerful handheld of the Vita and the upcoming PlayStation 4. If you haven’t seen the conference yet then buckle up as we bring you the biggest news from the conference from the 2013 Tokyo Game Show.

PlayStation Vita

The first portion of the conference was on Sony’s powerful handheld system, the PlayStation Vita. And there were big news from the getgo: a new PlayStation Vita model was announced. As shown above, the new PlayStation Vita model comes in many different colours, but the big changes are to its hardware:

  • The new model is called the Vita PCH-2000
  • The new model is 20% slimmer than the standard model
  • It is also 15% lighter
  • The Vita 2000 will have a 5″ LCD screen rather than an OLED screen
  • It will have an extra hour of battery life
  • The system will come with 1GB memory built in
  • The system will utilise micro usb
  • It will come in six colours in Japan: black, white, lime, pink, grey and frost blue
  • The new Vita 2000 model will be out in Japan on October 10th for ¥18,980 (around $190 USD)

Along with the new hardware announcement, Sony has also announced that a new 64GB memory card for the Vita will be released on October 10th this year. The card will cost ¥9,980, about $100 which was the price of the 32GB before the memory cards got a price reduction. The card has only been announced for a Japanese release date and an overseas date has not been announced yet. In lieu introducing this new card Sony has announced the new memory card prices for Japan:

  • 4GB memory card will cost ¥1,480 (about $15 USD)
  • 8GB memory card will cost ¥1,980 (about $20 USD)
  • 16GB memory card will cost ¥3,780 (about $38 USD)
  • 32GB memory card will cost ¥6,480 (about $65 USD)

Apart from the hardware announcements, here are the new software titles announced for the PlayStaion Vita:

  • Soul Sacrifice Delta – A new standalone update to the original Soul Sacrifice game with tons of new content. It is expected to release in March 2014
  • Phantasy Star Nova – Set in the same world as Phantasy Star Online 2, Nova will be an offline experience exclusively for the Vita. It will contain four player co-op and will be released in Japan next year.
  • Sengoku Musou 4 – The next major instalment in the Samurai Warrior series will be exclusive to the PlayStation Vita. The game will be released in February next year in time for the series’ 10th anniversary
  • Love Live! School Idol Paradise – A new video game based on the popular anime series and female idol group. The game is split up into three parts, will be exclusive for the Vita and will launch in May 2014.
  • Natural Doctrine – a strategy RPG coming to all three PlayStation systems. It is a new game from Kadokawa Games
  • Wonder Flick – a new RPG from Level 5 that will be on all three PlayStation systems. With a ‘cutesy’ aesthetic the game promises a seamless cross platform experience
  • Miku Miku Hockey – An augmented reality game that features air hockey and Miku, what more do you want?

Additionally, new bundles have been announced for the Vita including the Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster bundle, seen below.

PlayStation 3

The show continued on with all the PlayStaion 3 content. There weren’t many big announcements and nothing hardware wise. Here are the newly announced software titles for the PlayStation 3 in Japan:

  • Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- – The stylish fighting game from Arc System Works will be coming to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Utilising a new engine, the game will feature seamless transitions from 2D art to 3D animation as a super attack is launched.
  • Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends – The next instalment in the Dynasty Warriors series will be on all three PlayStation Systems. With lots of newly added content, and stability fixes the upcoming game hopes to add variety to the series.

And that is all the newly announced titles on the PlayStation 3. Other things were confirming the upcoming releases for the console and some PlayStation Plus updates. Now, onto the big news: The PlayStation 4.

PlayStation 4

789873939

The first major news for the PlayStation 4 is definitely a surprise. The PlayStation 4 will be launching in Japan on February 22nd 2014, a full three months after the North American and European release. The reason that the console will be releasing much later in Sony’s home territory is that they wanted a strong lineup of games when the system launched. The majority of launch games for the PS4 are all western games, so the later date will provide more time for Japanese games to release with the consoles.

871695385

Aside from the odd PlayStation 4 release date, here are some new software titles coming soon to the console:

  • Yakuza Ishin – Picture above, it is the eight game in the Yakuza series and will return to the Edo period, after Yakuza Kenzan. The game will be a launch title for the PlayStation 4 and will also be on the PlayStation 3. No international release date has been announced
  • Deep Down – Previously shown at the PlayStation meeting in February this year, Capcom’s Yoshinoro Ono came on stage to deliver solid information on the game. Deep Down will be a PS4 exclusive and is set in a 2094 New York, and also in a medieval place…wait what? The game has the player relive the memories of his ancestors as they roam around and hunt various monsters. Atrailer was also debuted to show the game in action, which includes 3 player co-op as of this announcement and randomised dungeons.
  • Lily Bergamo – A new game from Grasshoper Manufacture and GungHo that features extreme action. Releasing exclusively for the PS4, not much is known about the game but more is known about Suda 51 at the conference.
  • New Mobile Suit Gundam title – A new unannounced Gundam title will be coming to the PlayStation 4
  • New THE iDOLM@STER title – A new unannounced iDOLM@STER game is coming to the PlayStation 4
  • New Earth Defense Force title – A new unannounced EDF game for the PS4
  • Dream Club: Host Girls On Stage – An odd game coming to the PS4. The trailer reveals a conversation between a host girl and a man followed by a dance scene. It is Japan after all…
  • Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn – The beta for the PS4 version will begin when the console launched on February 22nd

Most of the games came and went as little information, apart from Deep Down were dropped. But at the last possible moment before the conference closes, Mr Andrew House himself shows up, speaks some impeccable Japanese and announces the…

PlayStation Vita TV

786000625

The biggest surprise is for last, the PlayStation Vita TV. Its a separate console that will primarily allow you to play Vita games via the main TV. The TV console itself only requires the input of the Vita game, so you don’t even need the system. The device will even allow you to play PlayStation 1 and PlayStation Portable games, and has multiple inputs as seen above. The Vita TV can pair with Dualshock 3 controllers and will be patched to include Dualshock 4 controllers.

The device will allow players to play the PlayStation 4 while in another, being a companion device hooking up to a different TV. Players can also the Vita itself as a controller. As of the announcement, Sony has announced that 13,000 titles will be playable via Vita TV. Additionally, you can use online video streaming services via the device, though the services are region specific and limited. The device will also support “nasne”, a networked recorder and media storage device.

468404076 (1)

The device itself launches on November 14th this year in Japan only, and will only cost ¥9,480 (about $95 USD). A bundle containing the Vita TV, an 8GB memory card and a Dualshock 3 controller will cost ¥14,980 (about $150 USD). The device seems to be a real interesting piece of hardware since it has multiple functions, not only for the Vita.

769144740

A Day with PlayStation

The last thing from the conference is the closing video titled A Day with PlayStation. The video itself showcases all the newly announced software titles and hardware this conference. One super important detail that isn’t reported is that the PlayStation Vita can use remote play via a Wi Fi network – a person is seen playing Knack on the Vita away from home.

And that ends the super eventful pre-Tokyo Game Show conference for Sony. A lot of new hardware announcements and a few software announcements, and of course that big surprise. Bad translators aside, the PlayStation brand is only getting started and will continue to grow.

2020 Tokyo Olympics Predicted in Akira

8

Last Sunday, Japanese rejoiced after the announcement that Tokyo will be the host city of the 2020 Olympic Games.

Tokyo, Istanbul and Madrid were the final candidate cities but Tokyo won the bid against Istanbul in a 60-36 vote. This will be the fourth time Japan is hosting the Olympic Games and Tokyo’s second.

Olympic enthusiasts formed “thank you” after the bidding closed.

And it wasn’t only the Japanese who were beaming with excitement as the news spread out like a wildfire to the anime community – as the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics was predicted in Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira.

Set in 2019, Akira is a background for the forthcoming Neo-Tokyo Olympics.

The sign for the Olympic site that appears in the film reads: “147 Days Until the Tokyo Olympics.” Under that, it reads, “With everyone’s effort, let’s make this a success.” The sign says this is the 30th modern Olympic games (it will actually be a the thirty-second).

The Neo-Tokyo Olympic Stadium is a huge factor in the manga as it was used as a backdrop for a secret military set-up, including Akira’s holding facility.

Akira Stadium

Fans are highly curious whether Japan would consider incorporating the futuristic setting Akira has as it would definitely fit the highly advanced host city. On a broader scale, would they consider including anime in general in the said event. It would be a delight to see Vocaloids dancing and opening and/ or closing the ceremonies. Or both?! That would be a lot better than the Spice Girls reunion. But without a doubt, this Olympic prediction would definitely drive anime fans straight to Tokyo to experience the summer multi-games event.

Psycho Pass will have a 2nd season and a movie

Psycho Pass 2

Well, well there are a lot of great news this past couple of days. What the hell maybe the world is ending wwwww. Anyway earlier the twitter of Yamamoto Kouji, chief producer of NoitaminA announced that “Psycho-Pass” will have a second season and a movie. With that I think the 2nd season will most probably end with a cliffhanger or it’ll be open ended just like the 1st season. Btw here’s the tweet of Yamamoto-san after the jump:

After a couple of hours they’ve released a trailer where we could hear Akane Tsunemori narrating several quotes from the first season and it ended with “SIByL still continues…”

Wow…I just can’t wait for more Psycho Pass and Butch Gen messing up my mind wwwww. About the movie well, it’ll probably a LONG wait again sigh…

until then…

Fall/Autumn Anime 2013 Chart V2.0

7

There’s no doubt that Summer has proven to be eventful thus far with half the season done. But just in case you didn’t have a large enough dose of anime, you can start planning since the chart for next season, Fall/Autumn, has already been released. The lovely Zana over at neregate has graced us with an update to next season’s anime offerings.

Version 2.0 of the Fall/Autumn anime chart is out with more up to date information about the plot, release dates and studios behind it. Of course all the information presented in the chart below is not final and is subject to change as we approach the season.

Some of the interesting anime to get excited for next season:

  • The highly anticipated second season of IS: Infinite Stratos 2
  • Kuroko no Basket Season 2
  • Persona 3: The Movie #1 Spring of Birth
  • Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitati!: Rikka Takanashi’s Revision
  • Little Busters ~Refrain~
  • Kyoukai no Kanata
  • The oddly named Freezing Vibration
  • Hajime no Ippo Rising (Season 3)
  • Magi: The Kingdom of Magic (Magi Season 2)
  • Code Geass: Boukoku no Akito 2 – Hikisakareshi Yokuryuu
  • BlazBlue: Alter Memory

There is also one series that has a plot quite familiar to a particular anime that released last year…

Girls und Panzer – Review

15

Title: Girls und Panzer (ガールズ&パンツァー)
Genre: Action, Comedy, Slice of Life, Tournament, School, Military, Tanks (lol do you consider this as a genre?)
Episodes: 12
Rating: 8.8/10

40969l

Summary:
In this world, Sensha-do (戦車道) (aka Tankwondo), the art of tank-combat, is a traditional Japanese martial art for girls. Miho, a girl who just transfered into the Ōrai Girls’ Academy in Ibaraki Prefecture, has been ordered by the academy’s student council chairperson to join the school team and compete in the national Sensha-do championships.

Story: 8/10
This went under my radar last fall 2012 mainly because I was mislead into thinking that this is an ecchi anime with a theme of tanks that reminds me of Uppote!. When I read PANZER I seriously thought it was PANZER=PANTSU but the truth PANZER mean TANK (oh god my mind have really been tainted ain’t it?! www) and that trailer that is full of girls, yup your typical recipe of a mediocre ecchi anime but I AM SO F*CKING WRONG!

Girls und Panzer - 01

Miho just recently transferred to Oarai Girls’ Academy trying to forget her Tankwondo past. She have been forcibly recruited by the student council president to join the newly established Tankwondo club of Oarai. Joining her are  driver Mako, gunner Hana, radio operator Saori and loader Yukari as the incomparable Anko Team. Will she be able to command this crew and win the Sensha-do Championship? Go watch this series to find out! Panzer vor!

Outstanding Execution

The story is really simple, Miho would just have to lead the Oarai Tankwondo team to be crowned the champion of the Tankwondo competition or else their school would be shut down. I know it’s very cliché but the execution of this show was outstanding that you wouldn’t mind the very simple plot. It has a tightly woven story: it’ll explore it’s characters, the rivalry and the setting in a very balanced manner. You’ll unknowingly get immersed into the world of Girls und Panzer (Man, watching these girls drive tanks made me want to drive tanks too!).

Girls und Panzer - 06Girls und Panzer - 07
Girls und Panzer - 08

Tank battle was really immersive (I’ll get on the technicalities later the Animation part) since it was nicely directed. Oarai was an underdog in the competition with their old and weak tanks but unlike those typical shonen shows where the underdog suddenly acquire some powers that could easily defeat their opponent, the Oarai team relied on preparation, training and nicely thought out tactics & strategy and most of all leadership. The show really made a point that yes, the Oarai team would win but the win would not be easy, they would have to work hard and learn to follow their captain.

Sure the setting was ridiculous but it sure is interesting. Imagine living in a world where Tanks are being driven by young girls as this martial arts known as Tankwondo helps the girls hone their grace and femininity (LOL what? www). Well I think that was a nice move since if it’ll be old smelly guys driving those tanks, I’ll probably drop this show haha!.

I never thought it’ll be very serious with it’s Tank theme but after watching episode 1, my thought went: “Ah…They’re really serious about the Tank action ain’t it?”. The whole series never strayed from it’s theme it was either the girls preparing for the tournament, looking for tanks and competing…in the end it all comes down to tanks.

This show asks us, is it all about WINNING? Will people respect you if you always above everyone else? I don’t think so. I think people would respect you and follow you as a leader if that leader would not leave anyone behind. In Miho’s instance she got scolded by saving a teammate in need but that caused her team’s loss. She didn’t accept her family’s style of Tankwondo that is solely about winning even if it means leaving a comrade behind. Eventually she developed her own style: No one gets left behind! Man that scene at ep 11 (Miho leaping tank to tank to save her comrades) was just so cool…so badass in a way.

434cb6a101f54f8f01ebbab9cedcaf38

Overall, a very simple premise but with an outstanding execution of not only tank battles but also a nice balance between the character development, the light heartedness and tank action…did I forgot to mention the tank action is so KAKOII (Awesome)?

Characters: 7/10
Huge Cast with very little character development which is understandable…

We have a huge cast of memorable and likable characters. Most may not have enough screen time but I won’t complain since if they did there would probably less tank action so in some way I am grateful. At least we got some development on Miho’s team  as every arc one of the members was somehow related to the ongoing plot. Well, most of the characters are straight forward that they don’t need further character development. I guess what makes most of the girls stand out is how they drive/operate their tanks. Their characters really stand out and it was really hilarious on how the show portrayed them. Imagine one tank being operated by a bunch of online tank game players, the other tank a bunch of history buffs and the other a bunch of volleyball players. You might think it’ll end up as a disaster but no, Miho the protagonist was able to lead this crazy team.

Girls und Panzer - 04Girls und Panzer - 05

I really like how the competitors in the Tankwondo Competition depicted the countries who are uhhhh I’m not sure about the term “Tank Power Countries” during the 2nd world war. You could could see the British team being composed and drinking tea during a match (oh and the Captain’s name even sounds like a tea flavor (Darjeeling) www). The American team was depicted by being cocky and boast their superior fire poer and technology. The Russian team was singing ‘Katyusha’ as they start the battle. The German team with their precision and overly serious attitude. The opponents really do stand out and make every match memorable in their own way.

Girls und Panzer - 03Girls und Panzer - 10Girls und Panzer - 11Girls und Panzer - 12

Animation: 10/10
VERY IMMERSIVE…Awesome cinematography

I mentioned earlier that the tank battle was really immersive and it was thanks to the creative cinematography like what they did in the first episode with that first person view from a tank, the moving tank as a whole during a battle and even you could experience being a gunner. It really felt like I am also in the tank experiencing what the characters are experiencing. Tank battles are well thought out and feels real despite the fact that some tactics are not bound by physics (well this is anime, TO HELL WITH PHYSICS!). Really, enjoyable and immersive.

garupan_12_06

DAT DRIFT!!! SO BADASS!! d=(´▽`)=b
(Thanks Kuro for the wonderful GIF!)

garupan_12_hetz

DAT STRATEGY…so damn speechless wwww (ノ゚0゚)ノ~

The CGI used for the tanks are beautiful and it does not look out of place with the 2D animation. Well, there were some hijinks in the 3D background during battles since it sometimes looks flat but I think that was understandable since they blow all their budget on the last 2 episodes.

Sounds: 9/10

The bgms used reminds me a lot of those old war movies with all it’s militaristic and marching music playing at the right moment and at the right time which is very fitting for the theme if the series. I’ll probably grab a copy when I got a chance. Here’s a sample below:

Can’t help myself, I’m saluting at the Anko team while this is playing www…

The OP song “Dream Riser”by ChouCho sounds like this show is full of light hearted moments but by looking at the action packed OP sequence well, it’s really all about tank action.

“I just feel my wind~”

ED sounds generic but I don’t know I find it so darn catchy. It also adds a pinch of light heartedness to the series. ED sequence is so damn KAWAII, that’s the reason I love Japan, they make all those unappealing stuff appealing to people like me *(*´∀`*)☆

“Enter, Enter Mission!!~”

Enjoyment: 10/10

This is one enjoyable show and I can’t believe I dismissed this one right away upon watching the PV and reading the summary last Fall. I watched this on our living room and it was quite embarrassing ‘cause I keep was shouting “You idiot not there go RIGHT!! AHHHHH!” or something along those lines and I was even clapping when Oarai did an impressive move so yeah embarrassing, people in my house probably whispered “what a weird girl” behind my back wwww. I honestly don’t care ‘cause this show deserves those kinds of reactions wwww.

Girls und Panzer - 13

A very entertaining show and is executed flawlessly. I recommend this to anyone who wants to watch something new and creative. It is a nice balance of action, comedy, plot and of course cute girls!

Here’s to hoping there will be a season two!

Panzer Vor!

Overall: 8.8/10 (High Priority Watch)

until then…

Fairy Tail TV Anime Project Set to Relaunched

40

A relaunch of the Fairy Tail television anime project has been green-lit. Original manga creator Hiro Mashima had indicated that there would be good news for fans on Thursday.

Mashima had asked fans in March to wait until he can announce some “good news” since the first television anime adaptation of Fairy Tail ended that month. Mashima added on Twitter at the time, “It’s actually not over yet. I can’t say more than this, but I hope you watch the rerun starting in April and wait for the day I can announce some good news. Anime is not the end. Don’t stop believing.” The series concluded with a “To Be Continued” title card.

Mashima also asked fans in English on June 7 to “please wait until next week. You will be surprised.” However, that time he was not teasing good news, but talking about not discussing the spoilers in the following week’s chapter.

Here is what the author tweeted which made Fairy Tail fans rejoice!

The above roughly translate to “FAIRY TAIL anime new series confirmed (continued) decision. It is thanks to the support of many of you. Thank you.”

Here are some bonus recently tweeted illustration by the one and only Mashima!

Here is the first promotional video for the film release of Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!:

From the looks of the trailer and the image, the film appears to be a re-release of the anime that aired in the Winter period last year. So there won’t be a full Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! movie with brand new footage but rather a movie experience of the original anime. It hasn’t been fully revealed if the movie itself will fully cover the 12 episode anime, or that there will be multiple movie parts. The latter is more likely to happen. Of course there won’t be a brand new movie anytime soon since the second season was officially confirmed earlier last month.

Additionally, tickets are available for advanced purchase from the 15th and each purchase will come with a clear file folder. You can obtain one of 4 designs that feature the four main female characters (Rikka Takanashi, Sanae Dekomori, Shinka Nibutani and Kumin Tsuyuri) in their swimsuit attire. The designs are done by the character designer of the TV anime  Kazumi Ikeda. The folders are only available for a limited time.

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! is an anime adaptation of the light novel series of the same name by Kyoto Animation. The novels entered the Kyoto Animation Awards in 2010 and received an honourable mention award. The light novel was eventually published by Kyoto Animation in June 2011 and the anime aired just last season. The anime received rather high sales and TV ratings prompting more demand for the anime series and light novel series. Here is a brief sypnosis of the anime from MyAnimeList:

Yuuta Togashi suffered from chuunibyou while he was in middle school. When he graduated, he put that dark history behind him and forgot about it… or he was supposed to. High school was smooth sailing and full of enjoyment—until the unavoidable, sad event occurs. The event that locks Yuuta into a contract with Rikka Takanashi and disrupts his desperately ordinary life.

The second season still has no confirmed date. The theatre version will be out on September 14th this year so if your in Japan, you know what to see next.
