A film and TV anime were released alongside each other in 1999, the movie being a 20 minute anime produced by Mamoru Hosoda (Wolf ChildrenThe Girl Who Leapt Through Time). The Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) series was created by Hajime Isayama. It started off as a manga in 2009 and is published in Kodansha’s monthly Bessatsu Shounen Magazine. To date there has been 14 compiled volumes of the manga. A prequel light novel adaptation started in 2011, and two spin-off manga started serialization in 2012: Shingeki no Kyojin: Before the Fall and Shingeki! Kyojin Chuugakkou. In April 2013 the series was picked up for an anime adaptation. The anime series was produced by the newly formed Wit Studios. The series has grown in popularity since the anime’s debut, with the manga selling over 36 million copies as of April this year. Here is a synopsis of the anime from Haruhichan:

Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of titans.

Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a titan in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a colossal titan that appears out of thin air. As the smaller titans flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single titan and take revenge for all of mankind.

First Impressions: Hibike! Euphonium

9

Hibike Euphonium PV Image

Title (English): Sound! Euphonium

Title (Japanese): 響け!ユーフォニアム

Animation Studio: Kyoto Animation

Genres: Music, School

Episodes: 4/?

If you don’t read manga or light novels, and just watch anime like me, you’re probably wondering what Kyoto Animation had in store for Hibike! Euphonium. K-On! is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, Kyoto Animation work, and regarded as one of the best by the Japanese. I was also a huge fan of K-On!, and I still am to this day. It is the anime I can always go back to whenever I want and it never gets boring for me to watch. K-On! was just a fun anime, and I liked how the characters interacted with each other. You got this real sense of how this how true friends should be. In this way, the music was a side part of the anime, only really used as the way to keep the five of them together. In this way, some people were annoyed with K-On!, since music should have been the main focus. Will KyoAni retread K-On!‘s popularity and recreate the same thing?

The story of Hibike! Euphonium begins with Kumiko Oumae. She is a euphonium player who has just finished graduating from middle school. After her school’s ensemble failed to make Nationals, she blurts out to her fellow bandmate, Reina Kousaka, that they weren’t cut out for Nationals anyway, and that upsets Reina. Come high school, Kumiko is thinking about whether or not she should return to a school ensemble. When the new friends she meets, Sapphire Kawashima and Hazuki Katou, decide to sign up for the school ensemble, Kumiko tags along. When she arrives, she discovers Reina has also signed up, and Kumiko has yet to make up with Reina over what she said back in middle school. The anime so far follows Kumiko’s band practices and her school life as she tries to make up with Reina over her past.

Even though K-On! and Hibike! Euphonium are both done by Kyoto Animation, there are a lot of differences between the two. Take everything you know about K-On!, flip it around, and you have Hibike! Euphonium. It’s a way more serious music anime with characters that are not buddy-buddy right off the bat, and they actually take their club activities seriously. Unlike K-On!, there’s a clear goal in mind for the characters, and they have to work hard towards that goal. Even the advisers for K-On! and Hibike! Euphonium are complete opposites. Sawako from K-On!, while occasionally giving a hand in the club, messed around a lot during her time as adviser. Taki-sensei from Hibike! Euphonium on the other hand, isn’t afraid to chew out those he thinks are not doing their work properly. They’re anime on two opposite ends when it comes to how they present the music side of their stories. Music is the main focus of Hibike! Euphonium, with the characters taking a side role.

Taki-sensei isn't afraid to tell the ensemble they suck, with a smile on his face.
Taki-sensei isn’t afraid to tell the ensemble they suck, with a smile on his face.

Speaking of the characters, we’ve got an interesting cast of characters. While Sapphire and Hazuki are your standard character archetypes you see everywhere in anime, Kumiko is a little different. She’s cynical and a realist, and often says what’s on her mind before she really thinks it through. She’s not the type of character that is usually seen in anime, especially not in KyoAni’s work. Personally, one of my favourite characters is one of the seniors in the band, Asuka Tanaka. She’s a real oddball, and she’s fun to watch. She helped make the first couple of episodes enjoyable before they got into the real meat of the story.

This is not what you think it is. Get you head out of the gutter.
This is not what you think it is. Get you head out of the gutter.

As I’ve mentioned plenty of times before, Kyoto Animation’s works rank among some of the best looking in anime. They’re certainly not going to break tradition now. The animation is nice and smooth, and the characters and backgrounds are drawn with a very high level of detail. The anime looks like any other Kyoto Animation anime; their style is very distinctive. Their style focuses a lot on colour, and making their characters look as cute as humanly possible.

Sound-wise, as a music anime, there’s a few good tracks in there. The OP and ED are good as usual from KyoAni, and the anime also makes use of classic orchestral works like “From the New World” (Symphony No.9 in E minor) by Dvorak, as the music they play in their ensemble. It works well, and it’s enjoyable to listen to some classical music. KyoAni usually hires rookies to do their main characters, and they do it again Hibike! Euphonium. Chika Anzai (Chaika from Hitsugi no Chaika) as Reina Kousaka, and Tomoyo Kurosawa (Tina Sprout from Black Bullet) as Kumiko Oumae are the two out of the main cast with the most experience.  So far, most of them work for their appropriate roles, but I don’t think it’s anything special yet. A side note: Minako Kotobuki (Tsumugi Kotobuki from K-On!) voices Asuka Tanaka. So she’s voicing both series’ oddball characters huh…?

Hibike Euphonium From the New World by Dvorak

Right now, Hibike! Euphonium is a fun watch, and it is different from K-On! If you weren’t happy with K-On!‘s style of showing off music, you will most likely be happy with what direction Hibike! Euphonium is going. It’s an anime with more substance and less fluff, and it’s fairly easy to get into especially if you’re a musician. The anime doesn’t have a specified length yet, but Kyoto Animation hasn’t done a 2-cour anime since Hyouka. Sure they’ve done two seasons (Chuunibyou, and Free) but that’s it. It wouldn’t surprise me if Hibike! Euphonium is also 1-cour, with a second season if it does well enough.

What do you guys think of Hibike! Euphonium? Let me know in the comments!

Triage X’s Posters Are as Sassy as Usual

In the June issue of Megami comes this new plot-heavy poster of Shouji Sato’s Triage X. This new visual features Mikoto Kiba and Oriha Nashida displayed in their underwear while showing signs of excitement.

In the April issue of NyanType a visual was also featured:

The March issue of NyanType also revealed a visual of Oriha Nashida:

Triage X is an ongoing manga series written and illustrated by Shouji Sato which began serialization in the May 2009 issue of Monthly Dragon Age. Shouji Sato hints on the cover flap of volume 1 that the reason Triage X was created was because of Highschool of the Dead‘s prolonged hiatus, thus in terms of content and theme, the two are very comparable.

The series is currently being published at a monthly schedule.

Triage X synospsis from Haruhichan:

Mochizuki General Hospital boasts some of the most well-trained (and well-endowed) nurses in town. But though these ladies spend much of their day battling sickness, their after-hours are spent fighting a very different sort of disease… Under the leadership of the hospital chairman, a handful of staff members and local teenagers form a group of mercenary assassins, targeting the “cancers” of society and excising those individuals before their wickedness spreads.

Grisaia no Kajitsu: Le Fruit De La Grisaia is a visual novel by Front Wing that originally released on February 15 2011 for Windows. The novel features character designs from Akio Watanabe and Fumio (Tomoyo After ~It’s a Wonderful Life~), scenarios written by Nachi Kio, Ryuta Fujisaki, Yoshigazu Kuwashima, and Kazuya, with Elements Garden (Mouretsu Pirates) composing the music. The visual novel won the 2011 Moe Game Awards grand prize, as well as various other awards for its scenario and music. Two sequels followed the release of the first, in 2012 and in 2013. The first novel was ported to the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita last year. Additionally, a manga adaptation began serialization last February.

Here is a synopsis of Grisaia no Kajitsu from Haruhichan:

Mihama Academy—on the surface, a closed learning environment established to nurture students who find themselves at odds with the world around them; in actuality, an orchard-cum-prison built to preserve fruit that has fallen too far from its tree.

Whatever the circumstances behind its establishment, Mihama Academy is at present home to five female students, all with their own reasons for “enrollment.” For better or worse, each girl has established a routine obliging of her current situation; life moves at an idle, yet accommodating pace within the walls of Mihama.

Yet with the arrival of the institute’s first male student, the nearly preposterously opaque Kazami Yuuji, the students at Mihama begin to fall out of step with their predetermined rhythms. Will Yuuji prove to be the element the girls around him needed to take hold of their lives once more, or will the weight of their pasts prove too steep a wall to overcome?

And in the first place, just who is Kazami Yuuji? While the true nature of the “job” he is wont to alight to at the most haphazard of moments remains shrouded in secrecy, one thing is for certain—his encroachment upon the quiet orchard known as Mihama Academy will prove itself momentous in one way or another. And of course, one cannot discount the possibility that perhaps Yuuji himself carries the weightiest past of any of the students…

Love Live! School Idol Project is an original anime produced by Sunrise studios that aired in January 2013. The conception of the anime project started in 2010 by Dengeki G’s Magazine. The editors wanted the project to be heavily influenced by fans, such as the costumes, hairstyles and names. Throughout this process, a manga of the project simply called Love Live! began in early 2012 by Sakurako Kimino and Arumi Tokita. The next part in the project was the anime series, followed by this app and an OVA. The second season titled Love Live! School Idol Project 2nd Season aired from April 6, 2014 to June 29, 2014 for a total of 13 episodes and an anime film will be released this Summer.

Here is a synopsis of the series from Haruhichan:

Otonokizaka High School stands on the border of three cities: Akihabara—a pop culture mecca that’s evolving by the minute; Kanda—a conservative, cultured city where history and tradition reign supreme; and Jinbo—a quiet area reserved for a more mature, sophisticated population. Amidst this culture clash, the school now faces closure due to the enrollment of fewer and fewer students.

With the school planning to close within three years, nine female students come together with one thing in mind—form a pop idol group to revive the school’s popularity and keep it from shutting down. “In order to protect our beloved school, there’s only one thing we can do… become pop stars!”

Monster Musume synopsis from MAL:

Monsters—they’re real, and they want to date us! Three years ago, the world learned that harpies, centaurs, catgirls, and all manners of fabulous creatures are not merely fiction; they are flesh and blood—not to mention scale, feather, horn, and fang. Thanks to the “Cultural Exchange Between Species Act,” these once-mythical creatures have assimilated into society, or at least, they’re trying.

When a hapless human named Kurusu Kimihito is inducted as a “volunteer” into the government exchange program, his world is turned upside down. A snake-like lamia named Miia comes to live with him, and it is Kurusu’s job to take care of her and make sure she integrates into his everyday life. Unfortunately for Kurusu, Miia is undeniably sexy, and the law against interspecies breeding is very strict. Even worse, when a ravishing centaur girl and a flirtatious harpy move in, what’s a full-blooded young man with raging hormones to do?!
