One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Weekly Shounen Jump since July 19, 1997; the individual chapters are being published in tankoubon volumes by Shueisha, with the first released on December 24, 1997, and the 75th volume released as of September 2014. One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young man whose body gains the properties of rubber after unintentionally eating a Devil Fruit, and his diverse crew of pirates, named the Straw Hat Pirates. Luffy explores the ocean in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as One Piece in order to become the next Pirate King.

The chapters have been adapted into an original video animation (OVA) produced by Production I.G in 1998, and an anime series produced by Toei Animation, which began broadcasting in Japan in 1999. Since then, the still continuing series has aired over 672 episodes. Additionally, Toei has developed thirteen animated feature films, two OVA’s, and five television specials.

One Piece has received wide critical acclaim, primarily for its art, characterization, humor and story. Several volumes of the manga have broken publishing records, including highest initial print run of any book in Japan and the first book to sell over three million copies in Oricon history. As of 2013, the series had over 345 million volumes in circulation worldwide, making it the best-selling manga series in history.

One Piece synopsis from Haruhichan:

Gol D. Roger was known as the Pirate King, the strongest and most infamous being to have sailed the Grand Line. The capture and death of Roger by the World Government brought a change throughout the world. His last words before his death revealed the location of the greatest treasure in the world, One Piece. It was this revelation that brought about the Grand Age of Pirates, men who dreamed of finding One Piece(which promises an unlimited amount of riches and fame), and quite possibly the most coveted of titles for the person who found it, the title of the Pirate King.

Enter Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy that defies your standard definition of a pirate. Rather than the popular persona of a wicked, hardened, toothless pirate who ransacks villages for fun, Luffy’s reason for being a pirate is one of pure wonder; the thought of an exciting adventure and meeting new and intriguing people, along with finding One Piece, are his reasons of becoming a pirate. Following in the footsteps of his childhood hero, Luffy and his crew travel across the Grand Line, experiencing crazy adventures, unveiling dark mysteries and battling strong enemies, all in order to reach One Piece.

Review: (KonoSuba) Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!

20

KonoSuba PV Image

Title (English): KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!

Title (Japanese): この素晴らしい世界に祝福を!

Animation Studio: Studio Deen

Genres: Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy

Episodes: 10

Over the last couple of years, there have been a seemingly endless string of anime that are based in a video game world, or worlds that resemble something out a video game. Accel World, Log Horizon, and of course, Sword Art Online are just a few. Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! (KonoSuba for short) is another anime set in a fantasy world resembling a game. However, while most of these anime take their video game worlds seriously, KonoSuba throws the serious tone out the window and opts to make fun of the whole concept.

Story and Characters:

Kazuma Satou is an otaku NEET who spends his time playing video games. On his way back home from buying a new video game, he sees a girl about to be hit by a vehicle and he pushes her out of the way. When he regains consciousness, a goddess named Aqua tells him that he died in the most ridiculous fashion, and that he now has a choice. He can either go to Heaven or Hell. Aqua informs him though, that Heaven is simply no fun, and Hell is well… Hell. So she presents him with a third option: she can reincarnate him in a game-like fantasy world where his objective would be to take down an evil Demon King. He jumps at the chance to do this, and she tells him that he can bring one person/item into the world with him. When he can’t decide and Aqua starts pressuring him, Kazuma chooses her, and another goddess grants his wish. Aqua now finds herself stuck in this new world with Kazuma, and he begins his adventure to stop the Demon King.

That's one hell of way to go out.
That’s one hell of way to go out.

This sounds like a pretty standard set-up for an anime based in a video game world, and it is. However, KonoSuba turns the plot on its head and is just the set-up for an anime that pokes fun at a lot of cliches in these types of anime. KonoSuba is a comedy first and foremost. There is little plot development, and even when there is, the characters still have fun messing around with what would usually be considered dramatic moments in any other series like this. Just as an example, one of the party members, Darkness, gets hit with a death curse and she will die in a week. However, Darkness is a masochist and she enjoys the prospect of slowly dying over a week’s time, which baffles the caster. Just when it seems the episode is going to end on a cliffhanger, Aqua uses her healing abilities to dispel the curse, Darkness is saved, and then the credits roll. It’s moments like these that define this anime as something not to be taken seriously at all. It’s there to be very entertaining. The anime starts off at a nice pace, but they begin to rush near the end by quickly introducing characters with little context on how they actually met, making you feel like you missed an episode somewhere. The first time they did it, I actually went back to rewatch the previous episode to see if I somehow missed an entire five minutes, and I didn’t. They just introduced a character with a flashback scene that doesn’t actually exist. It feels really disjointed, especially since the beginning was very well paced.

Speaking of other characters, Kazuma and Aqua don’t travel alone. There is the aforementioned Darkness, who is a masochistic crusader playing the tank role in the party, and Megumin, an archmage who wields a single extremely powerful spell. Aqua herself is an arch priest and the team’s healer, and Kazuma is an adventurer, the worst class possible. This sounds like a great team right? Wrong! Aside from Kazuma, it’s clear these girls have never played a game before in their lives. The only reason they manage to clear quests is because of Kazuma’s leadership, and the fact that the girls are all advanced classes. The girls tout their abilities all the time, but all of them have a fundamental flaw. Aqua is as dumb as a rock, Megumin can only cast her spell Explosion once a day before collapsing, and Darkness can’t hit anything with her sword and her masochist tendencies means she doesn’t even try to dodge attacks. There’s also Kazuma who is very knowledgeable about games, but his class means he has to work the hardest out of everyone in his party. There is a certain charm to all of these characters because of their strengths and flaws, and they make up the bulk of the enjoyment as the fights become absolutely hilarious because of how ineptly the party fights. It takes Kazuma’s game knowledge to complete the vast majority of their quests. There is also genuine camaraderie between the party members as they adventure together and complete these quests.

While there’s not a ton of story, there really doesn’t need to be for a comedy-focused anime. The story that is here, is generally well paced to start, with a bit of rushing near the end. The characters are quirky and have their own likeable points.

Art and Animation:

Easily the worst part of KonoSuba is its art. While the background art itself is decent, the way the characters are drawn most of the time is awful. Facial expressions are wildly inconsistent, and during the last couple of episodes, sometimes the characters look like they were drawn quickly just to get the episode out the door. In general, the last episodes look like they were just thrown into a blender and they just came out a mess. This is my first time watching a Studio Deen anime, but I’m told this is normal for them. If that’s the case, they need to step up their game. A second season was just announced, so I’m hoping that it looks a lot better in the future.

Ew... what's with Megumin's face? And her face holds for about 5 seconds.
Ew… what’s with Megumin’s face? And her face holds like this for about 5 seconds.

The animation is half-decent, at least it’s not as bad as the character art. There are some scenes with inconsistent animation, but it’s usually during the funnier scenes, which makes me wonder if it’s on purpose. The OP animation is decent, but the ED animation doesn’t quite hold up. There’s also wholly unnecessary breast jiggling. Not only is it necessary, it’s not even animated well. The animation as a whole is not as bad as the art but I’ll give the aniamtion a pass.

Sound and Music:

When it comes to this department, KonoSuba isn’t too bad. A mix of veteran voice actors and rookie voice actors were brought in. Rookies Jun Fukushima as Kazuma, and Rie Takahashi as Megumin, complement the veterans Sora Amamiya as Aqua, and Ai Kayano as Darkness. Jun Fukushima got Kazuma’s cynicism down well, and Ai Kayano did well with Darkness, as it seems she always does with any given character. Technically, Sora Amamiya is rather new, but she’s played a bunch of major roles since she broke onto the scene in 2014. Rie Takahashi also just won an award for “Best New Voice Actress” in Japan, and she does do a good job with Megumin. I had no problems with the voice acting for anyone. Aqua can grind on you a bit, but her character is supposed to annoy people, so it’s excusable.

The OP and ED for KonoSuba are also a couple of good songs. The OP “fantastic dreamer” by machico is a nice upbeat song that fits the anime’s tone. The ED, “ちいさな冒険者” (Chiisana Boukensha), sung by the female main cast, is quite different. The ED is a peaceful song with a nice, slow and very catchy rhythm which makes it my favourite ED of the season. The background music is decent, but nothing really special.

Final Verdict:

KonoSuba was on nobody’s radar to start off the season, but it grew in popularity as the season has gone on thanks to word-of-mouth. KonoSuba is pretty much a perfect anime for those who are into video games and MMOs in particular. It makes fun of video game and adventure anime cliches and provides a barrel of laughs each week thanks to its crazy cast of characters. KonoSuba is a fun-filled adventure that kept me coming back each week to see what crazy stuff its characters would get up to.

+ Wacky and likeable set of characters

+ Great ending song

+ Good voice acting

+/- Great jokes, as long as you have some video game knowledge

– Art is subpar

What did you guys think of KonoSuba? Let me know in the comments!

The hardware is labeled “Nervegear Prototype.” “Nervegear” is the name of the virtual reality hardware used by the characters in the original Sword Art Online story to interact with the game.

The beginning of the demonstration places users in a “bazaar” environment, allowing them to test their ability to manipulate world objects. Later in the demonstration, users are able to fight The Gleam Eyes (from the 74th floor of the game in the original story), alongside three other users.

Pre-registration for the “Alpha” of the demonstration reached 99,800 people, although only 208 applicants were chosen. The test is taking place in Tokyo from March 18-20.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki. It was originally serialized in Weekly Shounen Jump from 1986 to 2004, before being transferred to the monthly seinen magazine Ultra Jump in 2005. The current story arc, JoJolion, started in 2011. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is currently Shueisha’s second largest manga series with its chapters collected into 111 tankobon volumes and counting (only Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo, with over 180, has more).

A six-volume original video animation adaptation of the later half of the series’ third story arc, Stardust Crusaders, was released from 1993 to 1994 by studio A.P.P.P. Six years later, they produced a seven-volume series adapting the arc’s first half from 2000 to 2002. A.P.P.P. also produced a theatrical film of the first arc, Phantom Blood, in 2007. From 2003 to 2005, Super Techno Arts released an English dub of both OVA series as one on DVD in North America. The third story arc of the manga received an English release in North America from 2005 to 2010 by Viz Media, who will also publish the first and second arcs in 2015. A 26-episode television anime, produced by David Production and covering the first two arcs, aired on Tokyo MX and other stations starting in October 2012 and ending in April 2013. A second season covering the third arc titled JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders began broadcast in April 2014 and ended with episode 24 on September 13, 2014.

The JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure manga has sold over 80 million copies in Japan alone, making it one of the best-selling manga series in history, and has spawned a large media franchise that includes several novelizations and video games, action figures, a jewelry line, and even snack foods.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (2012) synopsis from Haruhichan:

Beginning its tale in 19th century England, young aristocrat Jonathan Joestar finds himself locked in bitter rivalry with Dio Brando, a low-born boy who Jonathan’s father took under his wing after the death of Dio’s father. Discontent with his station in life, Dio’s fathomless lust to reign over all eventually leads him to seek the supernatural powers of an ancient Aztec stone mask in the Joestar’s possession—an artifact that will forever change the destiny of Dio and Jonathan for generations to come. Fifty years later, in 1938 New York City, Jonathan’s grandson Joseph Joestar must take up his grandfather’s mission and master the abilities necessary to destroy the stone mask and its immensely powerful creators who threaten humanity’s very existence, the Pillar Men.

Boruto, the sequel manga to Masashi Kishimoto’s iconic shounen manga Naruto caused a lot of excitement at 2015’s Jump Festa during its series announcement. Spring 2016 – Top 6 Shows I’m Looking Forward To

17

This is my first post here, so for those who don’t know me, I blog over at Geekorner-Geekulture, and the upcoming post is an excerpt from my Spring 2016 season preview, of the 5 shows I’m most looking forward to in the upcoming season, that begins on April 1st, just two and a half weeks away! Hopefully, this post will help you find shows you might’ve overlooked, but which are worth your time. As such, the focus will not be on sequels, as fans of Teekyu don’t need me to tell them the 10th spin-off is coming up. Also, unlike many other preview lists, there’s less focus on premise and plot, and more focus on the people working on the show. As Asterisk War and Tale of the Worst One had shown us recently season, premises are similar, but it’s the people working on the show that make the difference.

5-tied) Big Order:

Big Order anime Key Visual

I liked Mirai Nikki (Future Diary) quite a bit. It was a lot of fun. It was crazy and over the top, but it was fun. This is an adaptation of a manga by the same mangaka who’s given us Mirai Nikki, Esuno Sakae. He’s rejoined by Series Composer and anime script author Takayama Katsuhiko, who was one in charge of Mirai Nikki’s adaptation; He’s also been in charge of Aldnoah.Zero, ef (both A Tale of Memories and A Tale of Melodies), Ga-Rei Zero, Baka to Test, and Sasami-san@ganbaranai, so he’s clearly better with adaptation than penning his own work, and is right at home with, well, over the top craziness.

This is the full-series directorial debut for director Kamanaka Nobuharu, so hopefully he’ll be able to bring to fruition this latest show about a bunch of people who can shape reality through the power of their destructive wishes.

Briefly: I should probably rewatch Mirai Nikki, and it’s quite possible this show will be dumb in bad ways, but what I’m hoping for is a fun schlocky run, though it might be better marathoned. It’s a thin dividing line between “Dumb and bad” and “dumb and good”. A new director? Well, here’s hoping.

Airing Date: April 15th.

5-tied) Boku no Hero Academia / My Hero Academia:

Boku no Hero Academia anime / My Hero Academia anime

The season’s big shounen manga adaptation. Directed by Nagasaki Kenji, who directed Gundam Build Fighters, Classroom Crisis, and No. 6. Series Composition and script by Kuroda Yousuke, who did composition for Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom, Infinite Ryvius, Saint Seiya, Big Swing, Madlax, Gundam Build Fighters, Hayate no Gotokue, Honey and Clover, Hellsing Ultimate, Gungrave, and scripts for many more.

While the director hasn’t done a lot, Gundam Build Fighters was good in exactly the same way that I hope this show will be good – it was fun and light. And that Series Composer? That’s a lot of good stuff. Combined with all the good things I hear about the manga, it sounds as if we’ve got one of my favourite and incresingly more rare products on our hands – a fun, no-nonsense shounonsense battler, minus all the LN crap.

Briefly: Shounen battler! I love those! They’re rarely anything special, but I love ’em anyway.

Airing Date: April 3rd. Preview.

4) Koutetsujou no Kabaneri / Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress:

Koutetsujou no Kabaneri anime / Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress anime

I’ve seen this show jokingly referred to as “Attack on the Iron Fortress,” and considering it’s made by Wit Studio, directed by Araki Tetsurou with Tanaka Hiroyuki as assistant director, and Sawano Hiroyuki is in charge of music composition, it’s not hard to see why. In case some of these names don’t mean much to you, Araki is also the director behind Death Note, Guilty Crown, and Highschool of the Dead, while Tanaka assisted him on Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) and Guilty Crown, and directed Claymore, and Hellsing Ultimate episodes 5-7 on his own. Sawano Hiroyuki also did the music for Aldnoah.Zero, Guilty Crown, and Kill la Kill, all of which had some great music.

Series Composition is handled by Okuchi Ichiro, who worked on Code Geass, Guilty Crown, and Valvrave, which all paint a very specific style. He’s also worked on Azumanga Daioh and PlanetES, though, as well as scripts on Kuroshitsuji, Shigofumi, and Turn A Gundam. Script is handled by Seko Hiroshi, who worked on Ajin, Owari no Seraph, and a bunch of Attack on Titan and Zankyou no Terror (Terror in Resonance) episodes.

So, the million dollar question, what do I think of it? I actually thought Attack on Titan was a darn good 16 episode series, which unfortunately was stretched to fit 25 episodes. Araki’s style is very loud, there’s no other word for it, but much of it seems to come down to trying and mask padded pacing. As an anime original, it will hopefully not suffer through the same issue. Also, as an anime original, it might not be as popular as a manga-based series, but it also means we’ll be spared the people who aggressively and maliciously spoiled Attack on Titan as it aired.

Briefly: There’s a bunch of talented people working on this show. They’re mostly talented at creating shlocky shows, which miss the mark as often as they hit it for me, but some of my favourite shows fall into this genre.

Airing Date: April 7th. Preview.

3) Concrete Revolutio: Choujin Gensou – The Last Song / Concrete Revolutio: A Superhuman Fantasy 2nd Season

Concrete Revolutio anime 2nd season Key Visual

Concrete Revolutio’s first cour was good enough to end as my 6th best show of 2015. With a nuanced approach to “multiple justices,” of trying to do the right thing while accepting that the other side believes they’re doing the same thing, the show also takes a close look at how shaping the way people perceive justice might be more important than being “just” to begin with. The first cour intertwined a continuing and developing character drama with episodic vignettes.

I was wondering for a moment, “Where will they go from now?” as we “found out” what led Jirou to leave, but since the show has never been a mystery and we’ve known all along, the answer is clear – they will tell us more of the struggle, while exploring moral and social questions. They’ll also have Urobuchi Gen writing an episode or two, for those to whom it makes a big difference. But since it’ll exist within the larger narrative, I don’t find it particularly important.

I do recommend picking this show up if you hadn’t before. If you’re having trouble with the time-skips, check my episodic write-ups, which aside from a thematic discussion of each episode also provide an up to date timeline.

Briefly: A second cour of a show I liked? I’m on board. This show rarely “excites” me, but I expect to enjoy it and find a lot that is worthwhile there, with a few touching moments and moments of highlight animation tossed in.

Airing Date: April 3rd.

2) Mayoiga:

Mayoiga anime

This is one of the most interesting productions of the seasons, with the highest possible highs, but also the possibility of imploding into mediocrity or even worse. Director Mizushima Tsutomu has been in charge of a lot of high profile shows, such as last year’s top show, Shirobako, as well as Prison School, Genshiken Nidaime, Girls und Panzer, Another, Blood-C, xxxHolic and a few more. He sometimes makes shows I don’t care for, but it’s usually not for reasons involving his directing, and even if it is, it’s because he accomplished going in a direction I don’t care for.

But here’s where it starts getting thorny, Series Composition is done by Mari Okada (AnoHana, Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans, M3, Nagi no Asukara, Fractale, Gosick, ToraDora, WIXOSS, and many more). Okada has a tendency of getting lost when she tries to fill 24 episode series with 16 episodes’ worth of content, or when her plots have more than 5-6 characters in them. Well, Mayoiga has 30 characters, each with their own reasons to want to erase their pasts. The show has actually sent out designs for 11 of these shows, meaning they’re likely to not be entirely minor. This is exactly the sort of show that Okada goes “Full Okada” in, and not in the good way.

Furthermore, the show has reached out to crowd funding to fund its last legs of production. They asked for $30k, while common numbers for the production of an anime episode run around $100-300k, so perhaps it was a publicity stunt, but one must remember Mizushima’s show, Girls und Panzer, had to delay its last two episodes by 4 months. And while it might work for a slice of life sports show, it’d be a death blow to a mystery and/or heavy drama show. So, gotta hope for the best, but prepare for the worst, with this one.

Briefly: Interest Rating: 2.5/3. That’s my interest rating, my “tempered hope rating” would be closer to 1.25/3. Please give us the good Okada. Please don’t have the production implode!

Airing Date: April 1st. Preview.

1) Joker Game:

Joker Game anime

Last season’s Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju (well, this season, since Winter didn’t end yet) is an example of something very rare in anime – a drama revolving around adult characters, and if that’s not quite rare enough, it’s a period drama. Joker Game might not be a period drama, but rather a period mystery-thriller, but that’s rare enough, and more than that, it’s based on a series of novels (not light novels). While some such shows are light novels in anything but name and not always good (Perfect Insider, HaruChika), it’s still something that makes me sit up and take notice. I mean, the first novel (out of three) even won the Mystery Writers of Japan award in 2009, and has received a live action adaptation last year.

The story about pre-World War 2 era Japan will revolve about spies, betrayal, and all that good jazz. Nomura Kazuya had worked on Robotics;Notes, the Sengoku Basara movies and 2nd season, and Ghost in the Shell 2015. He’s mostly dealt with movies, so it’d be interesting to see how he handles this. Series Composer Kishimoto Taku has been in charge of this season’s Boku dake ga Inai Machi (ERASED), Usagi Drop, Haikyuu, and Gin no Saji (Silver Spoon). I tend to like his work.

Briefly: Period thriller-mystery based on novels? Aside from Japanese mystery novel adaptations not doing so hot for me lately, the only thing I’m wary of is that these type of stories lend themselves better to a marathon-watching than to being watched weekly, especially with a director who’s mostly dealt with movies up to now.

Airing Date: April 5th. Preview.

These are only my 6 most-looked forward to shows in the upcoming season, if you’d like to see what other shows I’m interested in, or what shows I’m wary of, don’t forget to check the post from which this is excerpted, which covers the vast majority of the shows this upcoming season, omitting a few shorts and sequels.

So, what are the shows you guys and gals are the most looking forward to, and what’s your impression of the season as a whole? I for one am pleasantly surprised.

After more than a year of waiting, Shonen Jump+’s official website announced that Yoshihiro Togashi is resuming his Hunter x Hunter manga in the Ankoku Tairiku (Dark Continent) arc. This year’s 16th issue of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine will reveal more details on Saturday.

Hunter x Hunter Manga to Return from More than a Year of Hiatus

The manga has been on hiatus since 2014’s combined 37th/38th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump in August 2014. What was initially a two-week hiatus for serious lower back pain has extended due to health issues until now.

Hunter x Hunter is a manga series by Yoshihiro Togashi. The series started in 1998 and is published in Shueisha’s weekly Shonen Jump Magazine. To date the series has a total of 32 volumes. Yoshihiro Togashi placed the manga on hiatus in March 2012 after setting the record for longest run without breaks, without any news of when the manga will return. The series received an anime adaptation in 1999 from Nippon Animation that ended in 2001, followed by a series of OVAs. A new animated series relaunched in 2011 from Madhouse, retelling the series from the start. Madhouse also produced two animated films, which released in 2013. There has also been two musicals based on the series, and a slew of video games have been released from Konami and Bandai Namco.
