An anime television series adaptation produced by AXsiZ began airing in April 2016. An English version of the visual novel will be released by Sekai Project.

Wagamama High Spec synopsis from Haruhichan:

Even though he’s just a student, the protagonist in Wagamama High Spec also happens to be the author of a manga published in a weekly magazine. Since it’s mainly an ecchi and romcom type of story, he is actually hiding this fact from most people around him. The only people that know are his younger sister and his best friend.

But then on one day, the student council president happens to find out his secret, just as she was actually looking for a male member to include in the student council. Afraid of having his secret exposed, our protagonist joins the student council under the promise of his secret staying safe.

Strike Witches is a media project that started in 2005 based off of Humikane Shimada’s illustrations. The first project was a manga from Yoshiyuki Kazumi, but was cancelled after one volume. A light novel series from Noboru Yamaguchi released the following year in Kadokawa Shoten’s Sneaker Bunko imprint for a total of 3 volumes. This was followed by an OVA and anime adaptation from Gonzo (Welcome to the N.H.K.) in 2007 and 2008 respectively. Since then, many more manga and light novel adaptations were released, as well as the anime’s second season and an animated film, all animated by AIC (Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari).

Here is a synopsis of Strike Witches from Haruhichan:

The year is 1944 and the world lives in fear of unidentified flying objects called Neuroi. With the old-boy old guard unable to thwart this deadly menace, humanity turns its desperate eyes to an aerial attack force with much nicer legs. Meet the girls of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, better known as the Strike Witches. These darlings of the great blue yonder may not have standard issue uniforms, but they do have all the right stuff. Where the average flyboy falters, these dolls blast aliens to bits in the bat of an eyelash. With a little magic and a whole lot of leg, the girls of the 501st are winning the war on pants, and aliens!

First Impressions: Flying Witch

4

Flying Witch PV Image

Title (English): Flying Witch

Title (Japanese): ふらいんぐういっち

Animation Studio: J.C Staff

Genres: Comedy, Slice of life, Supernatural

Episodes: 4/12

A few slice of life anime this season are choosing to ditch the usual city/school life to tell a more tranquil tale of life in the countryside. In fact, a couple of my favourites this season, Kuma Miko, and this anime Flying Witch, both take place in northern Japan which is a fairly rare occurrence. These two make for a good watch if you want to relax after something stressful. I’m going to focus just on Flying Witch on this First Impressions. Flying Witch is a bit more interesting, but if you need a dose of moe this season, I would recommend Kuma Miko since its female lead is absolutely adorable and her personality contrast with the male lead makes for some funny and heartwarming moments.

Flying Witch focuses on a novice witch, Makoto Kowata, who moves to a small town in northern Japan to live with her relatives. In this setting, witches live among us and are not always shy about performing magic in front of other humans. Witches have their own societies, but are otherwise included along with normal humans. Once she arrives she reunites with her cousins, Kei Kuramoto and Chinatsu Kuramoto, regular humans from a farming family. While Kei knows of her cousin’s magical abilities, Chinatsu is unaware and quickly becomes interested in Makoto’s witchcraft.

Flying Witch Dreams

As a slice of life anime, there’s no central plot and the anime focuses more on characters than anything else. It’s always nice to have some sort of other element to a slice of life anime to help spice things up a bit. Each episode usually revolves around Makoto meeting someone from the magic world, and they usually teach her something new about the world she only knows so much about. It’s also an experience for Chinatsu who is seeing magic for the first time in her life and she is enthusiastic with seeing magic, although she often has fun reactions whenever she meets an odd person who practices magic. The new characters appearing in each episode is what keeps everything moving forward, and Makoto can be seen practicing more and more magic with each episode.

The anime itself has a nice artstyle with animation par for the course for a slice of life anime. For some odd reason, the opening animation has a weird green tint over it that’s kind of distracting for me, but no other complaints besides that. J.C Staff can usually crank out some quality work with both art and animation, so it’s good to see that it’s remained consistent so far.

The main cast consists of new voice actors, a couple of whom are getting their first ever roles in an anime. Minami Shinoda, who voices Makoto Kowata, and Shinsuke Sugawara, who voices Kei Kuramoto are two completely new voice actors. While I like Minami Shinoda, who sounds like she’s been in the business for a while, Shinsuke Sugawara sounds a little stiff. Maybe this will change later on, but that’s my initial impressions of the two of them. Both of Flying Witch’s opening and ending songs are nice and relaxed, which helps set the tone for the series as a whole.

As I mentioned at the start, Flying Witch is great for anyone who wants to watch something calm and soothing. Flying Witch brings in a fun dash of magic to a slice of life anime that helps make things interesting and give you something to look forward to every week. If you have some time, it might be worth checking out to see if you like it.

What do you think of Flying Witch if you’re watching it? Let me know in the comments!

Attack on Titan 2nd Season Delayed to 2017

0

The Marketing Director of Spanish anime distributor Selecta Vision was recently featured in a podcast with Mision Tokyo, where it was reported that the upcoming second TV anime season of the Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) manga has been delayed to 2017.

Selecta Vision marketing director Manu Guerrero revealed that the second season would be delayed till January, 2017. Manu mentions that Kodansha, one of the producers of the anime and publisher of the Attack on Titan manga, revealed to the distributor that the anime will be delayed to next year. No official statement from the anime’s official parties has been made.

Here is the preview video for the second season that was revealed at the conclusion of the second compilation anime film:

The first visual has been released for the upcoming second season of Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) anime, based on Hajime Isayama’s manga of the same name, revealed in the previous issue of Gigazine and Animate TV’s Anime Guide.

Attack on Titan_Haruhichan.com 2nd Season Visual

The second season of the anime was first revealed at the premiere of the Attack on Titan: Crimson Bow and Arrow (Shingeki no Kyojin Movie 1: Guren no Yumiya) compilation film last November. The premiere also revealed the release date for the second compilation film, Attack on Titan Part II: Wings of Freedom (Shingeki no Kyojin Movie 2: Jiyuu no Tsubasa) which will be out in Japanese theatres on June 27th this year.

The Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) series was created by Hajime Isayama. It started off as a manga in 2009 and is published in Kodansha’s monthly Bessatsu Shounen Magazine. To date there has been 14 compiled volumes of the manga. A prequel light novel adaptation started in 2011, and two spin-off manga started serialization in 2012: Shingeki no Kyojin: Before the Fall and Shingeki! Kyojin Chuugakkou. In April 2013 the series was picked up for an anime adaptation. The anime series was produced by the newly formed Wit Studios. The series has grown in popularity since the anime’s debut, with the manga selling over 36 million copies as of April this year. Two live action film adaptations will be releasing in Japan this year. The first images for the live-action 2015 Attack on Titan film were also earlier released.

Here is a synopsis of the anime from Haruhichan:

Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of titans.

Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a titan in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a colossal titan that appears out of thin air. As the smaller titans flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single titan and take revenge for all of mankind.

First Impressions: Sakamoto desu ga?

1

Sakamoto desu ga PV Image

Title (English): Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto

Title (Japanese): 坂本ですが?

Animation Studio: Studio Deen

Genres: Comedy, School, Slice of life

Episodes: 3/12

Haven’t you heard? I’m Swagamoto.

If you’re a guy, you may have stumbled across this scenario in your school life. Another boy, perfect as can be with the girls, teacher’s pet, and he makes everything look effortless as he continues to be the very image of perfection. Being angry with that boy was probably a natural reaction. That is the premise behind Sakamoto desu ga?, an anime about a perfect guy and his school life.

There exists a perfect student, Sakamoto. His grades, sports prowess, and the way he handles the girls are the very definition of cool. Accomplishing any task is no problem for him, all while talking in a smooth tone. There isn’t much to the story at all, and the reason how he became this awesome of a person hasn’t been made clear yet, so this is all that we have to go on right now. The episodes are split into two halves, each telling its own story. The anime is really focused on comedy, with story being tossed out the window. The comedy itself is pretty good, but the pure ridiculousness of the scenarios, and how Sakamoto tackles each one, is what truly makes the humour.

Sakamoto himself is the only character that had made a regular appearance in the show and, as such, not much is known about many of the other characters. However, Sakamoto himself makes for a good character if only because his actions and words are the basis for the show’s enjoyment.

Sakamoto Perfect Smile

The visuals and animation of Sakamoto desu ga? is pretty standard for the genre. Studio Deen has once again taken some animation shortcuts in Sakamoto desu ga? including having three and a half minutes of the first episode having three guys juggling a volleyball back and forth, and repeating the first 30 seconds of every episode with the same intro. Some of the crazier moments in the anime will have better animation than the rest of it, but that’s the extent of the animation.

One of the standout things about Sakamoto desu ga? is Sakamoto’s voice actor. Hikaru Midorikawa, with his cocky yet smooth voice, does a perfect job with Sakamoto. I can only see a couple of other voice actors that can nail Sakamoto’s character. This anime is augmented with a couple of other big names playing supporting roles like Yui Horie, Kana Ueda, and Tomokazu Sugita. The opening song, “Coolest” by Customi z, is definitely one of the catchiest songs of this season. The ending song is a little less memorable, with it being a slow song that does not fit the show. The background music during some parts of the show can standout depending on some situations in which it’s used.

As of right now, Sakamoto desu ga? is a good comedy if you’re into seeing main characters be that person you’ve always wanted to be. Just seeing how Sakamoto deals with situations is exciting, and it keeps me coming back for more. This is a pure comedy, with the only character in the main focus is Sakamoto and no story to speak of. There’s no background as to how Sakamoto has managed to accumulate this much swagger and it would be nice to learn it. Hikaru Midorikawa nails his role as Sakamoto, and the opening song is one of the best this season. I hope it can remain this entertaining.

What do you think of Sakamoto desu ga? Let me know in the comments!

Barakamon Prequel Manga Handa-kun Receives TV Anime Adaptation

Barakamon is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Satsuki Yoshino. It started serialization in Square Enix’s Gangan Online February 2009 issue. The story follows Seishu Handa, a calligrapher who moves to the remote Goto Islands off the western coast of Kyushu, and his various interactions with the people of the island.

A spin-off manga, titled Handa-kun, started serialization in Square Enix’s Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine starting in the November 2013 issue. It takes place six years prior to Barakamon, focusing on Seishu’s life as a high school student.

Handa-kun synopsis from MAL:

A manga that takes place six years prior to the events of Barakamon, detailing the life of Seishuu Handa as a high school student—and a very interesting life it is.

In Handa-kun, Seishuu Handa is admired by his peers as a calligraphy genius and given the utmost respect, but Handa-kun himself is under the mistaken impression that the deference and attention he receives from the other students is actually bullying. Handa just wants to live a quiet life, but hilarity ensues as one character after another challenges his position as the school idol, and somehow comes away as a fan all while Handa is horrified and clueless.

New Pokémon Sun and Moon Trailer Reveals Starters & More

4

A new trailer for the upcoming 2016 release of Pokémon Sun and Moon was streamed on Tuesday. The new video has revealed lots of new information about the two games, including the starters, legendaries, the location and the release date.

Pokémon Sun and Moon will be coming out on the Nintendo 3DS on November 18 in North America and Japan, and on November 23 in European regions. It will be set in a new region called Alola, based off of Hawaii and its surrounding islands. Trainer customisation will also return from Pokémon X and Y.

The Boxarts for the two games have been revealed that feature their respective legendaries (names not yet officially revealed):

The three starter Pokemon in Pokémon Sun and Moon are:

  • Name: Rowlet
    Category: Grass Quill Pokémon
    Height: 1 ’00 ”
    Weight: 3.3 lbs.
    Type: Grass/Flying
    Starting Move: Leafage

The first of the potential partners is the highly adaptable Grass Quill Pokémon, Rowlet. This Pokémon can fly silently through the skies, sneaking up on its opponent without being noticed. It can attack its opponents using powerful kicks, and it can also attack from a distance using the razor-sharp leaves that form part of its feathers. Rowlet can survey its environment and turn its neck nearly 180 degrees from front to back, so it can see directly behind itself. When in battle, Rowlet turns its head to face its Trainer when waiting for instructions.

  • Name: Litten
    Category: Fire Cat Pokémon
    Height: 1 ’04 ”
    Weight: 9.5 lbs.
    Type: Fire
    Starting Move: Ember

Pokemon-Sun-Moon-Starter-Litten Pokemon-Sun-Moon-Starter-Litten-Move

The cool-headed Fire Cat Pokémon, Litten, is the next choice for a first-partner Pokémon. Litten’s fur is rich in oils and is immensely flammable. It constantly grooms itself by licking its coat, collecting loose fur into balls. It then ignites these hairballs to create fireball attacks. When the time comes for Litten to molt, it burns off all of its fur in one glorious blaze.

  • Name: Popplio
    Category: Sea Lion Pokémon
    Height: 1 ’04 ”
    Weight: 16.5 lbs.
    Type: Water
    Starting Move: Water Gun

Pokemon-Sun-Moon-Starter-Popplio Pokemon-Sun-Moon-Starter-Popplio-Move

The third possibility is the acrobatic Sea Lion Pokémon, Popplio. Popplio can create balloons made of water from its nose and utilize them to create a variety of different strategies and attacks in battle. This Pokémon is better at moving in the water than on land, and can swim at speeds over 25 mph. On land, it uses the elasticity of the balloons it creates to perform jumps and acrobatic stunts.

Pokémon Sun and Moon will be releasing on the 3DS in North America and Japan on November 18, and in Europe on November 23. More information will be revealed in the upcoming months and at E3.
